Despite the weather’s best efforts having us believe otherwise, the summer has ticked through and before we know it, it’s the beginning of August and the hockey season is only a few short weeks away. With the Ulster Hockey Union’s Senior 4 scheduled to pass back on Saturday 17th September at home against Instonians, the girls from Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club reported back to pre-season training last week. With a full programme of matches until the Christmas break, it has been essential for everyone to knuckle down quickly. With terrific numbers reporting back after the break – and several new faces to add to the mix – coach Brian McKee laid out the plan for the next few weeks. It has been a gentle lead in for the first couple of weeks which has allowed the girls to get back into the swing of things and start getting their fitness built back up before stick and ball work starts in a couple of weeks’ time.
The club has just launched their ‘Fancy a Game?’ campaign which has seen posters in local shops and over 2000 flyers delivered to homes in Donaghadee, Bangor and Newtownards as they try to both boost the profile of the club and recruit a few new hockettes to the ranks. If you’d like to give hockey a go – maybe you play for a school team, maybe you used to play, maybe you’ve never played before – come down and give the club a try – it’s a small, inclusive and friendly club and the girls will be very glad to see you. Training is currently taking place twice a week, with a short pre-season run on a Monday night, leaving from Donaghadee Rugby Club at 7.30pm and pre-season fitness on a Wednesday night at 7.30pm at the hockey pitch, Crommelin Park, Donaghadee. Junior training for girls aged 10 to 15 will also be commencing mid-September following the success of the 6 week junior programme last year.
