It only seems a few short weeks since Donaghadee LHC wrapped up the 2011/12 season with the traditional End of Season Do and prize giving ceremony. The girls managed to pick one of the few dry nights of the summer so far to enjoy a barbeque and drinks before heading into Donaghadee. The team finished Senior 4 strongly, with good wins over Newry Olympic (3-0) and Ballynahinch (4-0), which saw them finish the league in 6th – one of the best positions the club has managed since the league restructure a number of years ago. Centre forward Kerrie Turtle certainly played her part in this campaign, once again finishing top goalscorer for the club – including scoring twice in three games and getting a hat trick against Ballycastle to boost her final tally. On a slight twist to the Best Newcomer award, Ruth Kennedy was awarded Best Recomer as she returned in 2011 for her second stint at the club – here’s hoping this time stretches for lots of years to come! Most Valuable Player was awarded to Siobhan McAdam for being ever-present and ever ready, from super-subbing to donning the goalie pads for a couple of matches at the end of the season. Hugely consistent, Lisa Higgins had a superb season in defence and she only narrowly lost out in the Players’ Player of the Season award, but instead picked up the Captain’s Player of the Year award, with outgoing captain Carolyn Scott keen to acknowledge her contribution throughout the season. The Players’ Player of the Season 2011/12 was voted for by every member of the club, and Nina Wells was the overwhelming favourite for this award, with everyone recognising the huge part Nina plays in defence with her superb reading of the game and wonderful timing and interceptions.
