Last Saturday saw the start of matches for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club, with the now traditional intra-club Reds v Whites match taking place on the Dee’s home turf at Bangor Grammar.
With club members joined by several new faces, friends and sisters, there was a full complement of numbers for the afternoon’s run out in what turned out to be an entertaining and competitive match. It was won 3-2 in the end by the Whites, despite a couple of last minute chances for the Reds to even things up before the final whistle.
There was some excellent hockey on show in energy-sapping humid weather; tough conditions which will stand the girls in good stead as the season approaches. With friendlies against Saintfield at home this week (Saturday 2nd September) and Bangor away next (Friday 8th), along with the Grosvenor tournament on Sunday 10th September, there’s plenty of hockey lined up for the red and green.
The league proper starts on Saturday 16th September with both teams in action: the 1XI make the short hop to play Bangor away, while the 2XI are at home to Malone – and, with a number of new players joining the Dee ranks as the season draws closer, it promises to be another exciting year for the club.
