Senior 3: South Antrim 1XI 3-3 DLHC 1XI
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI were away to Lisburn on Saturday to face South Antrim, a team sitting just one point above the Dee in Senior 3 before this match got underway.
Donaghadee got off to a flying start when Kerry Kennedy gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with under 10 minutes on the clock; a typically flamboyant reverse stick shot had the South Antrim defence totally wrong-footed as the ball crossed the line in off the far post.
South rallied though and the remainder of the first half was very evenly contested and defensively Siobhan McAdam made a number of fantastic saves, with Amy Long and Paige Reilly in the heart of defence reading the attacks well to keep the home side out.
It was great to see Lisa Higgins and Natalie Jamison starting in the wide defensive roles on Saturday and both played their part in nullifying any threats from the South Antrim wings, with Ali Stevenson breaking up the attacks in the centre.
With the second half just underway, Donaghadee suffered a horrible 10 minutes in which they managed to concede 3 goals in quick succession; with less than 5 minutes between each, there was a sinking feeling that the home side were going to bag the three points but what followed was a remarkable display of grit from the girls in red and green.
Helen Hooks, tenacious as always, won the ball back on the left of midfield and burst forward towards the attacking circle. With the defenders drawn to the ball, Helen’s perfectly timed and weighted cross found forward Carolyn Scott free in the circle and she was able to fire off a first time shot to beat the scrambling keeper to bring Donaghadee back to within one goal.
Less than five minutes later, Donaghadee won a penalty corner. At the top of the circle, Leanna Young had time to pick her pass with Paige applying the deflection to beat the last defender to bring the score level at 3-3.
The action was end to end in the closing minutes of the game, with Emma McGimpsey and Emily Morris both doing their best to add to Donaghadee’s final tally, but the final score remained 3-3, with Donaghadee delighted to have earned a point from this match. Thanks to Brian McKee for umpiring.
The 1XI play league leaders Kilkeel at home on Saturday, pass back 1pm and the 2XI are in Minor Cup action away to Civil Service, pass back also 1pm.
Halloween Party a great success
Following the heroics on the pitch on Saturday afternoon, members of DLHC joined forces with Donaghadee Rugby Club as they jointly hosted a Halloween Party fundraiser. Well attended by both sets of players, the money raised will bolster the coffers of both clubs.
The clubs would like to thank the following for their very kind ballot prize donations: Porto Hair, Next, Stanley Woods Accountants, City Electrical Factors and Ulster Rugby.
