Senior League 3: DLHC 1XI 2-1 PSNI
Donaghadee Ladies’ 1XI were at home to PSNI last Saturday with a great opportunity to put more distance between themselves and fourth placed South Antrim at the halfway point in Senior 3.
In what turned out to be a fairly evenly contested match, Donaghadee were the first to score when Carolyn Scott hit a deflected shot at a penalty corner in the opening stages, after some great work down the right by Amy Long linking with right wing Catherine Armstrong, who drew the foul from the hapless defender in the circle.
Donaghadee were then caught on a quick counter attack with a sweeping move finished off at Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam’s back post to make the score 1-1.
With Kerry Kennedy and Helen Hooks providing the forward impetus for Donaghadee in the midfield channels, one quick ball found found Leanna Young wide left in the circle and the forward flashed a shot high across the face of the goal, with Carolyn only inches from connecting to divert it into the back of the net.
The Donaghadee defence then more than earned their Christmas Do drinks with numerous well-timed challenges and interceptions to keep the score level. With Claire Stewart bossing things in the centre, Paige Reilly and Amy were stopping the threats from the wide areas. Lisa Higgins played her part too, providing excellent cover just in front of the defenders – tucking in when necessary, and pushing up to help the midfielders in attack too.
With the match in its closing stages and it looking distinctly like Donaghadee were heading for their second draw in a row, Natalie Jamieson came on up front and she was lurking in the circle with Emma McGimpsey when Leanna carved one final opportunity, this time from the right hand side of the circle. Emma found herself totally unmarked at the back post and she met Leanna’s pinpoint cross in emphatic fashion to make the score 2-1 to Donaghadee, much to the joy of the Dee sideline support.
Thanks to Hannah Simpson for umpiring and to Mr Photobooth NI for sponsoring the winning match ball. The 1XI now have a week off before they welcome Bangor to BGS on Saturday 16th December in their final game of 2017.
Minor Cup Round 2: Donaghadee LHC 2XI 0-4 Coleraine 3XI
After a win in the first round of the cup, Donaghadee LHC Seconds were determined to put up a good fight against a strong Coleraine team in the second round, played at Bangor Grammar on Saturday.
Donaghadee started off strongly, despite missing Emily Morris and Tasha Paxton, trying their best to work through a tough, well-marshalled visiting defence. Midfielders Katie Donnelly and Vicky O’Neill worked hard to get the ball through to forwards Kerrie Turtle and Sarah Harkness but they were unable to find a breakthrough.
The possession then switched and Coleraine were quick to turn defence into attack. Defenders Nicky McMillen, Georgia Ferguson and Nina Wells were working well at clearing the ball from the circle but Coleraine slotted one in behind keeper, Janice McVeigh.
It wasn’t long before Donaghadee were on the attack again. Natalie Jamieson went on her trademark run up the pitch reaching the top of the opposition circle and winning a free. Taken quickly, Natalie was able to get a shot in but the goal was denied by the Coleraine defenders. At half time the score was 2-0 but the Donaghadee girls were not ready to give up.
After a slight shuffling of positions for Donaghadee at half time, the game started again with Coleraine immediately on the attack. Carmen Van der Schyff and Deborah Gilmour were able to break down the attack however and they did well to send the ball back up the pitch.
Despite plenty of effort all over the pitch, Donaghadee were not able to get the ball past the Coleraine keeper, while strong attacking play at the other end allowed the visitors to add another two goals, with the final score 4-0 to Coleraine. Thanks to Kerry Kennedy and Hannah Simpson for umpiring. The 2XI are back to league action next week when they play NICS 4XI away.
