There was a big turn out for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s End of Season Dinner on Saturday night. Once the formalities of the AGM were out of the way outgoing captains Kerry Kennedy and Kerrie Turtle led the awards presentations.
It was Kerry herself who took the first award, finishing the season as the 1XI’s top goalscorer – a splendid achievement for a midfielder, not least because most (all?) of her goals were scored in spectacular fashion – no such thing as a tap in for KK!
It was super to see Katie McKee – in her first season at the club – picking up the top goalscorer award for the 2XI and we look forward to seeing lots more goals from her next season!
Amy Long was ever-present in the 1XI defence this season, despite playing the second half of the season with a broken bone in her foot, and her sterling contribution to the team was recognised when she bagged both Captain’s Player of the Year and Coach’s Player of the Year; richly deserved, well done, Amy!
Coach Brian McKee recognised the contribution made by Vicky O’Neill by choosing her as his 2XI Player of the Year: Vicky not only playing week in, week out for the Seconds but also appearing for the 1XI on numerous occasions too.
Kerrie T then paid tribute to her newbies in the 2XI by awarding not one, but four Captain’s Player awards to Molly and Katie McKee, Erin Hamilton and Mia Park – all of whom have played an invaluable part in the season for the Seconds, and indeed stepping up to the 1XI when called upon. What an asset all four have been since they joined!
The players from each team also cast their votes for their own players of the season and it was Helen Hooks who was the overwhelming favourite for the 1XI while incoming 2XI captain Natalie Jamieson was voted in by her peers on the 2XI – well done to both of them!
The final award of the evening was presented to Dee stalwart Lisa Higgins in recognition of her 25+ years unbroken service to the club; Lisa has in fact amassed a mammoth 28 year playing career with no signs of slowing down – a remarkable record that was marked by a photo album of the many trips, matches and social occasions that Lisa has been a part of in her time at the club (so far!)
With the awards distributed all that was left to do was for Kerry and Kerrie to hand over the Captains shields to incoming leaders Helen and Natalie with the gratitude and best wishes from the rest of the club rounding off their season at the helm. Thanks a million, girls!
