Junior League 9: Holywood 2XI 3-0 DLHC 2XI
With the 1XI of Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club enjoying a free week last weekend, the red and green flag was being flown by the 2XI as they travelled to Strathearn to play neighbours Holywood.
With a strong home defence putting lots of pressure on any Donaghadee attacks, Holywood managed to frustrate the Dee for much of the match, despite Donaghadee enjoying a great first quarter.
Holywood began to grow into the game and in the second quarter managed to score a good goal to take the lead. The back four of Floss, Jemma, Lauren and Mia were undeterred as they fought hard to defend their keeper Janice who, in turn made some amazing saves which earned her the Player of the Match award.
There was plenty of action in the circles as the two teams tried to find the next goal with both sides showing great skill in attack and defence. The Donaghadee players showed great versatility too when usual centre back Tori stepped up to fill the gap left in the centre of midfield by injured captain Natalie.
Unfortunately the Holywood defence remained steadfast, keeping out the Donaghadee attacks despite numerous forays forward from midfield with Erin doing a great job of feeding the front three of Kerrie, Sarah and Vicky in the circle.
Unfortunately for the Dee, it was Holywood who came out the winners after scoring two goals in relatively quick succession during the last quarter to seal a 3-0 victory.
Thanks to Lisa Higgins for umpiring duties. The 2XI’s next match is at home on Saturday, pass back 2.30pm against Ards 4XI.
Line the Pitch with Pounds
We’re a mere week away from our first £1 collection to see how far along the halfway line we’re going to get when we line up all the £1 coins everyone has been gathering over the last month.
If you’d like to contribute, collect any spare £1 coins (in a Smartie tube if you wish!) and pass them on to any DLHC player before training next Wednesday evening, then keep an eye on social media to see how we’re progressing.
Our aim is to line the halfway line with £1 coins from one side of the pitch to the other by the end of the season to raise money for our club funds, so all help is much appreciated!
