Senior League 3: Limavady 6-0 DLHC 1XI
Donaghadee travelled to a pleasantly warm Limavady on Saturday to take on a notoriously strong Limavady side. Several Donaghadee stalwarts were unavailable due to suffering injuries in training. However, 5 of our regular 2’s stepped up and in, making their mark in the team.
Donaghadee were caught on the hop in the opening quarter when Limavady’s well drilled outfit capitalised on a few unforced errors. Nicola Patton in goals and the defensive unit of Paige Reilly, Lisa Higgins, Rachel McClatchey and Natalie Jamieson did a fantastic job of slowing the waves of attack, but Limavady were strong and relentless, giving themselves a 2-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Donaghadee made some changes in the following quarter, bringing the strength of Jan Morrow to the centre of the park which steadied the ship. Several attacks came in this period, with Jan and Laura progressing strongly down the right, feeding Emily Morris and Rachael Martin who attacked the circle with confidence. Although the Dee got the better of Limavady in all areas of the pitch in this quarter, they were unable to capitalise and the score remained 2-0 going in to the half time break.
The third and fourth quarters saw Donaghadee being stretched and although some fantastic skills were on show especially from Helen Herron, Lisa & Paige on the left, the Limavady squad proved too strong; two penalty corners saw another 2 goals and two further came in the final quarter as Dee legs tired.
It was no surprise that Paige walked away with Star Player this week, thanks to her sterling efforts in defence, and although a heavy defeat for Donaghadee on paper, it was a very enjoyable match with many positives to take home – first and foremost, the exceptional effort made from all 11 players with no subs to hand!
The 1XI are back in action this Saturday when they welcome Derg Valley to BGS, pass back 1pm.
Junior League 8: DLHC 2XI 3-0 Holywood 2XI
On Saturday the 2s stepped into their first win of the new season with a 3-0 victory over neighbours Holywood 2s at Bangor Grammar.
The Dee girls were strong from the first whistle, making sure the ball stayed in the Holywood half for majority of the first quarter, with Katie and Molly McKee running the flanks and Megan Gore pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch.
The Holywood defence put up a strong fight but Donaghadee didn’t take long to score their first goal of the match when Tasha Moore broke through at the top of the circle. Her resounding shot gave the Dee a deserved lead in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Holywood putting together a number of well worked attacks, putting Dee defence under pressure with a number of breaks saved by keeper Janice McVeigh with the help of the defensive trio of Jemma Thompson, Floss Scott and Miya van der Schyff. The speedy midfield of Erin Hamilton and Carmen van der Scyff did a great job in working back to provide additional support.
With half time approaching, Donaghadee caught Holywood on the counterattack as many of their players went forward in search of an equaliser, when Tasha slotted home her second goal, making the score 2-0 to the Dee at half time.
Going into the second half the Dee girls weere starting to settle into the game, making more advances, and winning penalty corners in the Holywood circle. The play remained firmly in Donaghadee’s attacking circle, with Row Moore capitalising on some confusion in front of goal to pop the third ball of the match into the back of the oppositions net, to make the sore 3-0.
Just as the whistle blew for the end of the quarter the ball was milliseconds away from crossing the line to give Tasha the first Dee hat-trick of the season but despite the goal not standing, it was as good as a hat trick in the eyes of her team mates, and this was enough to secure her the Seconds’ Star Player this week!
Next week sees the 2XI travel to take on Ards 4s (pass back 4pm)
