29/11/14 Senior League 4: DLHC 1XI v Instonians

Senior League 4: DLHC 1XI 1-2 Instonians
After a week’s break, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI were looking to halt the recent slump in form in this league fixture against Instonians, a team sitting just below the Dee in the league table. After the disappointing performance against Parkview when Donaghadee were last on the pitch, coach Brian McKee was keen that the team raised their game back to the level seen at the start of the season. To a player, each responded and Instonians found themselves with very little time on the ball in the opening part of this match.

Donaghadee enjoyed several good early spells of possession down the right with a Maura Hennessey cross a few minutes in shaving just wide of the left post. Donaghadee continued to use the width to good effect, with short accurate passing down both sides between Catherine Armstrong and captain Ruth Kennedy on the left and Maura and Kerry Kennedy on the right but with no success in the visitors’ circle.

Suzie Ferguson, Claire Stewart, Paige Reilly and Lisa Higgins were also clicking smoothly through the gears at the back, switching the play quickly from left to right as they dominated possession in the Dee’s defensive half of the pitch, ensuring a clean sheet was kept until the half time whistle.

After half time the forward positions were switched with Ruth trying her luck on the right and Kerrie Turtle on the left with Maura now in the centre and Victoria Speers being used to good effect as an impact sub with fresh legs as Donaghadee pressed in search of the opening goal.

Donaghadee had had the majority of the play in the match to this point but the Instonians centre midfielder seemed to be everywhere the ball was, and she was involved when a penalty corner was awarded to Instonians just after the restart. The resulting shot was deflected off a Dee stick past keeper Siobhan McAdam into the goal to give Instonians the lead. The response from the Dee players was immediate, with all 10 outfield players working the ball to red shirts as quickly and accurately as possible.

A run from Ali Lawther from the halfway line showed some lovely stick skills as she bypassed several Inst players to release Maura in the circle. The forward buried her chance and it was back to all square at one apiece.

Much of the remaining ten minutes were spent deep in Instonians territory with Donaghadee having several good chances to finish the game off but there were no more goals for the girls in red.

With the umpires signalling two minutes remaining, Instonians were awarded another penalty corner, with exactly the same outcome for the second time – a very late blow for Donaghadee although there should be consolation from the much improved performance from the previous match.

The 1XI will be looking to turn the good performance into points against South Antrim away on Friday night.

DLHC 2XI v Newcastle: Donaghadee conceded
Donaghadee 2XI were unable to field a team for their trip to Newcastle with late illness and injury cry offs combining with work and holiday commitments to leave captain Deborah Gilmour with no option on Saturday morning. The 2XI hope to have a number of players back for next Saturday’s Home fixture against South Antrim 2XI, pass back 1pm.

15/11/14 Senior 4: DLHC 1XI v Parkview

Senior League 4: Parkview 2-1 DLHC 1XI
It was a frustrating day at the office for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club as they travelled to Ballyclare to play Parkview Ladies in Senior 4 last Saturday. The home team dropped down from Senior 3 this season and have been slowly getting back to form.

The first quarter of an hour was quite open with chances being created at both ends but no real pressure on either goal before the Dee started to get their passing going through the midfield of Ali Lawther, Catherine Armstrong and Kerry Kennedy and the ball reached forward Kerrie Turtle in the circle but the Parkview keeper saved twice in quick succession. The pressure continued to build and a free hit from just outside the 23 taken by Ali found Emily Morris coming in from the right and rounding the keeper to slide the ball in to the net: 1-0 to the Dee after 21 minutes. Parkview didn’t take this lying down and the game soon opened up again as the home team were  awarded 3 penalty corners in quick succession, with two excellent saves by Dee keeper Siobhan
McAdam and a block by Lisa Higgins keeping them out.

The run up to half time continued in end to end style with neither side able to find the killer touch in front of goal, the Dee defence of Susie Ferguson, Claire Stewart and Paige Reilly working hard to get the ball upfield. The Dee lost Catherine Armstrong to injury and a reshuffle of players saw Carmen VanDerSchyff join the midfield battle.

The second half started brightly for the Dee as they attacked early down the right and Maura Hennessy fought her way in to the circle but her cross evaded Kerrie and Ruth Kennedy. Parkview came back on the counter and a foray down their left flank resulted in another penalty corner, after the ball was adjudged to touch a Dee foot. The clearance went awry and a second corner resulted. This time Parkview switched the ball quickly right to avoid Dee first runner Lisa, and a clear shot into the bottom corner levelled the scores.Donaghadee were quickly on the advance and some great work down the right from Kerry Kennedy drew a succession of quick frees and eventually a green card to the Parkview player, given 2 minutes off the pitch. The Dee continued to press hard through this period and attempts from Maura, Kerrie and Ruth came close but couldn’t get the ball in to the Parkview net.

With numbers even again Parkview mounted a flurry of attacks that were repelled by the defence and as the Dee raced back upfield they finally won a penalty corner, only for Ali’s shot to be saved by the keeper. In to the final quarter and with both teams chasing the game, an attack down the left by Parkview saw the ball scrambled over the line into the Dee goal to make it 2-1 to the home team. Donagahdee did not let their heads drop and kept pushing forward with the keeper pulling off saves from Kerrie and Ruth, the ball finally breaking to Kerry Kennedy but her shot cleared the Parkview crossbar. Further attacks drew another penalty corner, saved again by the keeper and a shot from
Emily was saved and as time ran out the match ended 2-1 to Parkview.

With a number of players missing due to injury and work commitments it was good to see the performances put in by those stepping up from the seconds. Many thanks to Mike for umpiring, coach Brian and the travelling support.

Donaghadee LHC 2nd XI go through to the second round of the Minor Plate after Ballynahinch 2nds conceded the first round tie. Neither Dee side has a match next week, but both teams are back in action on Saturday 29th November with the 1st XI at home to Instonians and the 2nd XI away to Newcastle.

8/11/14 DLHC 1XI v Coleraine and DLHC 2XI v Ballymena

Senior League 4: DLHC 1XI 1-3 Coleraine

It was first versus second when Coleraine Ladies 1st XI came to Bangor Grammar last Saturday, with Coleraine unbeaten in Senior 4 so far this year. Having lost narrowly to Newry last week, Donaghadee were keen to rediscover the winning ways which had elevated them to the lofty heights of the top of the table.

Indeed Donaghadee started very strongly, enjoying long spells of possession in the opening 15 minutes with Dee midfielders Ali Lawther, Kerry Savage, Kerry Kennedy and Tasha Paxton ensuring that the visitors weren’t able to clear the ball much beyond the half way line. Left wing Ruth Kennedy was able to work herself some space at the top of the circle to get a shot away but Coleraine had sufficient bodies in the way to clear the danger. Kerry K was also unlucky with one of her trademark specials heading for the roof of the net only to ping off the Coleraine keeper’s head and away to safety.

Somewhat against the run of play, Coleraine managed to work their way into the Donaghadee circle and win themselves a penalty corner, which they duly converted. It was then a case of deja vu – a second penalty corner awarded and exactly the same outcome: 2-0 to Coleraine. With the Dee trying vainly to reset after the two goals, a Coleraine forward was afforded too much time at the top of the circle which allowed her to place to ball just inside keeper Siobhan McAdam’s right post to make it 3-0 at half time.

The second half bore witness to further super hockey from both sides, with crisp, quick passing and good movement creating an end-to-end game, with both side doing their best to get the next goal. It went the way of Donaghadee, with a free hit just outside the attacking 25 crashed into the circle by Ali being met by Kerrie Turtle’s excellently timed run, sending the deflection flying past the Coleraine goalkeeper.

The chances were there for both sides, with Donaghadee’s defence called into action on several occasions to keep the score as it was; Siobhan made a couple of diving saves, Paige Reilly cleared off the line and Suzie Ferguson and Claire Stewart combined to ensure the ball continued to be cleared wide. Despite the pressure on the defence, Catherine Armstrong and Victoria Speers kept driving the Dee forward with their tireless running in midfield, feeding the ball to high forward Maura Hennessey as they searched for a way back into the game. It wasn’t to be however, with no more goals for either side. Final score 3-1 to Coleraine. Many thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring. The Firsts’ next game is away to Parkview on Saturday.

Junior League 8: DLHC 2XI 3-1 Ballymena 4XI

After the last couple of good team performances from Donaghadee’s 2XI with disappointing results, the girls were keen to make their mark on this week’s match as they welcomed Ballymena 4th XI to Bangor Grammar. Despite the poor conditions overhead Donaghadee were quickly into their stride attacking the Ballymena team. With the initial Dee pressure the team were awarded a couple of penalty corners in quick succession with Tori Rollo pushing the ball out strongly to Melissa Rollo whose clean strike went just wide of the post. The Ballymena defence were quick to clear the ball from the Dee’s second attempt denying any score from this line of attack. However with Donaghadee’s perseverance a long corner ball was played into the circle with the initial strike from Jan Morrow being saved by the Ballymena keeper but captain Deborah Gilmore showed her team how it should be done as she calmly put the rebound into the back of the net.

Unsurprisingly the Dee team and the numerous supporters on the sideline were delighted but Ballymena were quick to retaliate from the restart almost before the cheers from the onlookers had died down. Catching the Dee team unawares, Ballymena carved their way up the pitch and as the ball pinged around the circle they scrambled it past the home defence and over the line to equalise.

The rest of the first half continued as before with Donaghadee dominating play, and the Dee defence of Lisa Alexander, Ruth Howell, Amy Long and Deborah containing the Ballymena attacks with keeper Janice McVeigh pulling off some well timed saves when required.

After half time the Dee started well again and it wasn’t long before right wing Emily Morris broke through from the midfield and, with just the Ballymena keeper to beat, shot from the edge of the circle to put the home side 2-1 up. Ballymena were keen to get the match back level and put plenty of pressure on the Dee’s midfield and defence. Teegan Greer, Tasha Paxton and Tori worked hard to relieve the pressure with Tasha making a spectacular save to clear a ball off the line. Centre forward Jan picked up a loose ball and with some neat passes between Amy and Teegan worked the ball up the pitch only to have her effort cleared off the line.

With just a couple of minutes remaining in the game Emily put the match to bed with another shot from the edge of the circle resulting in a similar goal to her first. Much to the delight of the home team the final score read 3-1 in their favour. Many thanks to both Mike Smyth and Brian McKee for umpiring. The Seconds are next in action on Saturday in the first round of the Minor Cup.

1/11/14 DLHC 1XI v Newry and DLHC 2XI v Ulster Elks

Senior League 4: Newry 4-3 DLHC 1XI
Donaghadee were back in league action following the first round of the Intermediate Cup with a trip to Newry last Saturday. The match started in the late slot of the day, not helped by the over-running of the previous game, so by the time Donaghadee took the first pass back the daylight was fading fast, the rain was becoming progressively heavier and the conditions were pretty horrible for both sides. Donaghadee were quick to attack however, with Captain Ruth Kennedy making one of her penetrating runs down the left. The Newry sweeper cleared wide and with a quick counter attack down the Dee’s right, the cross came in and the unmarked home forward had a simple tap in to give her side the lead.

In a slight change of formation, Donaghadee were using Carolyn Scott as the high forward, Kerrie Turtle in the supporting central role with Maura Hennessey and Ruth working the wide channels. Maura worked herself enough room to feed the ball to Carolyn who had her back to goal at the top of the circle. A quick swivel earned the forward enough room to get the shot away and she did just that: 1-1.

Despite the ever-worsening conditions, both teams were intent on attacking hockey and Newry enjoyed a good spell of possession resulting in three successive penalty corners, with Lisa Higgins doing a sterling job as first runner, charging down the attempted shots to limit the chances. Newry’s third attempt deflected off a Dee defender however, taking the ball past Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam to give the home team a goal advantage for the second time.

With moments to go until the half time whistle, the Dee midfield of Kerry Kennedy, Ali Lawther and Dee debutant Catherine Armstrong were working hard to gain some momentum and their endeavour was rewarded with a penalty corner at the other end. Carolyn got her second goal of the day with a straight strike at the top of the circle to give the Dee parity at half time.

Shortly after half time, Donaghadee were awarded another penalty corner and in a carbon copy of the one just before the turn around, Carolyn struck again to give the Dee the lead for the first time in the match. It was to be her last action of the game, as she then came off with an ankle injury. Despite the enforced switch in personnel, Donaghadee dominated play with all 10 outfield players getting involved in building the attacks; Paige Reilly, Claire Stewart and Suzie Ferguson playing the ball round the back with confidence as they tried to switch the attack from left to right.

The momentum then swung back in the home side’s favour and, with Donaghadee unable to clear their lines, the ball fell to a grateful Newry forward and the score was back to all square at 3 apiece. From the restart, Newry quickly found themselves back in the Dee circle with the same outcome: 4-3.

Despite continued dogged running by the midfield and the forwards to try to salvage a point from the game, it was in vain as the final whistle brought an end to an entertaining goal-fest in miserable conditions. Despite this defeat, Donaghadee remain second in the league with leaders Coleraine coming to the Grammar next week in what is sure to be a closely fought game. Pass back is at 1pm, followed by the 2nd XI at 2.30pm and home match drinks back in Donaghadee for all past, present and future players of DLHC.

Junior League 9: DLHC 2XI 0-3 Ulster Elks
Donaghadee 2nd XI welcomed the Ulster Elks 5th XI to Bangor Grammar for their league match last week. Right from the first whistle Ulster Elks were extremely quick off the mark to carry the ball into the Dee circle, winning themselves an early penalty corner. Despite the best attempts of full backs Tori Rollo and Lisa Alexander the ball found the back of the net putting the visitors an early goal ahead.

Despite the early setback the Dee regrouped and enjoyed much of the possession for the remainder of the first half with the midfield trio of Carmen Van Der Schyff, Jan Morrow and Deborah Gilmore feeding the ball through to allow all three forwards Karen Fegan, Jill Dennison and Emily Morris plenty of shots on target; all of which were unfortunately denied by the Elks keeper. At half time the two half backs of Amy Long and Melissa Rollo were heard to say they were enjoying playing more attacking hockey high up the pitch which is always a good sign!

Thanks to a few suggestions from coach Brian McKee at half time, the Dee side came out fighting, however the Elks were also keen to take charge of the game leading to some end to end play. The Elks worked the ball into the circle from the right; the initial strike being successfully saved but the rebound was sent towards the far side of the goal. Lisa did her best at full stretch to clear the ball but unfortunately the ball just trickled over the line. With a few positional changes for the Dee team, Melissa – now at centre midfield – fed the ball strongly towards centre forward Jill but despite her skills she wasn’t able to get the home side on the scoreboard.

Captain Deborah and Carmen worked tirelessly down the left trying to thwart the efforts of the Ulster Elks but the Elks managed to slip another one past to go 3-0 ahead. Further attacking play by the Dee led to further shots on target but the Elks keeper was on fine form and refused to let any ball into her goal. Shortly before the final whistle Karen charged down a hit out which was unfortunately lifted and the ball connected with her cheekbone resulting in a nasty injury – we wish her a speedy recovery. Donaghadee finished the game with 10 players and although they had further chances, the final score read 3-0 which perhaps did not reflect how well the team played.

Many thanks to the Dee supporters cheering the team on from the sideline and to John McCallister for umpiring. Next match for the Seconds is the second of the home double bill at the Grammar against Ballymena 4th XI, passback 2.30pm before both teams head back to the Dee for November’s home match drinks.

25/10/14 DLHC 1XI v Saintfield and DLHC 2XI v Coleraine

Intermediate Cup Round 1: DLHC 1st XI 0-2 Saintfield LHC 1st XI
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1st XI took a break from league action last weekend when they welcomed Saintfield LHC’s 1st XI to Bangor Grammar for the first round of the Intermediate Cup. Saintfield are currently sitting mid-table in Senior 3, compared with Donaghadee’s Senior 4 and, with the Dee performing well so far in the league, this would be a good test against a higher league team.

Kerry Kennedy and Carolyn Scott both returned after being unavailable the previous week and Donaghadee started this match brightly, both these players involved in early probes down the right. Saintfield’s defence however were a match for the task, setting up their midfielders for attacks of their own with both teams trying to impose their game on the opponents. Ali Lawther and Kerry Savage worked hard to protect the Dee defence of Paige Reilly, Claire Stewart, Suzie Ferguson and Lisa Higgins and collectively they limited Saintfield to only a few half chances. With Donaghadee working the ball wide through Ruth Kennedy and Carolyn, Kerrie Turtle and Maura Hennessey were doing their best to make the break through at the other end.

Coming up to half time – and somewhat against the run of play – a Saintfield forward broke through the middle of the pitch and unleashed a superb shot into the roof of Siobhan McAdam’s goal; Siobhan getting the fingertips of her gloved hand to the ball, but just not enough to deflect the ball over the crossbar.

Despite being a goal down, Donaghadee were holding their own and indeed could – and should – have equalised on one or more occasions in the second half, with a number of shots either saved by the Saintfield keeper or going wide. With Donaghadee committed to finding the equaliser, the game became very open and Saintfield took advantage of a numerical advantage in the Dee 25 to add their second goal of the game. While the final score was 2-0 to the visitors, Donaghadee played very well against a team in a higher league and can certainly take heart from this performance as they head to Newry next week to see if they can continue their unbeaten league form. Many thanks to Brian for umpiring and best of luck to Saintfield in the next round of the Cup.

Junior 9: Coleraine 3rd XI 2-0 DLHC 2nd XI
With Donaghadee 2nd XI having no match to play the previous weekend the team made the long journey to the lovely newly laid pitch at Coleraine keen to get the match underway.  Both teams started the match strongly with plenty of attacking play from the two sides. The Dee midfield trio of Natasha Cameron, Carmen Van Der Schyff and Victoria Speers worked hard throughout the game trying to create openings to feed the ball through to the forwards, however it was Coleraine who made the first attempts at goal. Fullbacks Tori Rollo and Lisa Alexander made some great clearances which were quickly picked up by Melissa Rollo on the left and Amy Long on the right who then fed the ball up the wings. When the ball did manage on occasion to touch a Dee player’s foot in the circle earning Coleraine penalty corners, Donaghadee’s well rehearsed defensive structure kept the ball out of the net along with some sterling work and great saves by keeper Janice McVeigh. Further attacking play by Coleraine led to a nicely struck ball just inside the circle and, due to a slight deflection off a Dee stick, the ball slipped past Janice into the net.

With a rousing team talk at half time and a couple of positional changes, the Dee once again came out fighting in the second half, albeit at times reduced to playing with 10 due to injuries and niggling illnesses and without the luxury of a sub. Jan Morrow and Karen Fegan worked well together up front leading to Karen making a beautiful strike at goal but the ball just inched past the outside of the post. Coleraine set up play again quickly earning themselves a penalty corner at the other end. Victoria Speers now doing first runner made a lovely tackle clearing the ball to thwart their attempt. Then when a loose ball was struck well by a Coleraine player into the Dee circle it found the slightest of touches from a teammate’s stick, awarding Coleraine their second goal.Another attack from Coleraine resulted in a save from Janice taking some of the speed off the ball but, as it travelled on towards its target behind her and looked like it was going over the line, Amy made a fabulous clearance off the line stopping the home side from going 3-0 up.

Not giving up Donaghadee fought back and enjoyed much of the possession in the last 10 minutes. Tori fed a side line ball to right wing Emily Morris who made a run up the line finding Jan in the circle but the Coleraine defence were quick to clear the ball. Natasha Cameron made a great run on the left to have a shot at goal but was denied the effort by the Coleraine keeper. On the final whistle Donaghadee were awarded a penalty corner and the 10 outfield players crowded the circle. The initial strike by Melissa found a Coleraine foot and so another penalty corner was awarded which was unfortunately cleared by Coleraine. The Dee had a great end to the match so will try to carry that momentum forward to next week’s game against Ulster Elks. Many thanks to Mike Smyth for travelling with the team to umpire.

18/10/14 Senior League 4: Ballycastle v DLHC 1XI

Senior League 4: Ballycastle LHC 2-3 Donaghadee LHC 1XI

Donaghadee LHC’s 1st XI made the journey to the North Coast to play Ballycastle LHC last Saturday aiming to make it five victories from five played so far this season – a run of results unheralded in recent times for the Dee – and captain Ruth Kennedy and her team headed off without the luxury of a single sub; current top goalscorer Kerry Kennedy and forward Carolyn Scott both unavailable for this match.

Donaghadee have traditionally been slow to start in this fixture in previous seasons but with the team there in good time and having completed a rigorous warm up, the Dee girls were determined to carry on the momentum gained from their terrific start to the season. It was unfortunate then that, especially given the lack of extra personnel, midfielder Kerry Savage was injured within the first few minutes of the game; a raised ball hitting Kerry on the hand, leaving Donaghadee with 10 players on the pitch almost straight away.

Despite being a player down, Donaghadee pressed forward, with Lisa Higgins intercepting a pass in midfield with a good run onto Ali Lawther, who spread the ball wide to Ruth. Some quick movement from the winger set Maura free in the circle and she finished the move off superbly, giving the Dee a 1-0 lead within the first five minutes.

With Paige Reilly dropping back into defence alongside Claire Stewart and Suzie Ferguson, Donaghadee were able to work their passing well round the back, limiting Ballycastle to only a few opportunities to equalise – none of which were taken by the home team.

With Kerry S sufficiently recovered to come back on to the pitch, she made up for lost time with some skilful passes down the right with Victoria Speers fitting in well on the right wing. One such move produced a lovely cross from Kerry which found Kerrie Turtle in the circle; Kerrie’s pinpoint accuracy finished it off nicely and doubled Donaghadee’s lead to 2-0 at half time.

After the half time turn around Ballycastle started much more strongly, with their forwards enjoying a lot more possession but Siobhan McAdam made several cracking saves in the Dee goal to keep Donaghadee’s 2-0 advantage. Despite all Siobhan’s good work, Ballycastle was awarded a penalty corner for a stick tackle in the Dee circle and they finally found some luck with a clean strike making it 2-1.

Donaghadee have been working hard on their fitness and as the match wore on, they were able to maintain the high intensity, high tempo hockey requested of them by coach Brian McKee, using this to their advantage with some lovely passes from attacking players Lisa H and Ali. With Ballycastle tiring, Donaghadee broke again with another great run down the right wing which, again, was finished off perfectly by Kerrie to restore the Dee’s two goal advantage.

The Ballycastle forwards were desperate to relieve the pressure on their defence and with only minutes remaining, they were delighted to be awarded another penalty corner due to a Dee foul in their attacking circle. With the full time whistle blown, Ballycastle were able to crowd the edge of the Donaghadee circle, with all ten outfield players up to try to force the ball over the Donaghadee line. Their luck was in and they did indeed score their second, but with time blown, the final score was 3-2 to Donaghadee, with the superb unbeaten record for the 1st XI continuing.

Donaghadee LHC 2nd XI also got three points at the weekend but without touching a ball thanks to Instonians 2nd XI conceding. This week the 1st XI are at home to Saintfield in the first round of the Intermediate Cup, pass back 1pm at Bangor Grammar on Saturday, while the 2nd XI are away to Coleraine.

Members of DLHC will be cycling the virtual 123 miles from Donaghadee to Dublin on static bikes in Bloomfields on Sunday to raise money for club funds so all support and encouragement will be most welcome!

11/10/14 Cooke v DLHC 1XI and Bangor v DLHC 2XI

Senior League 4: Cooke 1-2 Donaghadee LHC 1XI
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s First XI’s superb start to the season continued on Saturday when they travelled to Shaw’s Bridge to play Cooke LHC. With only Tasha Paxton missing from the Dee line up – unfortunately injured during Friday night’s 2XI match against Bangor – coach Brian McKee and Captain Ruth Kennedy were delighted to have the full 1st XI squad at their disposal.

The match was late starting thanks to the previous game overrunning but the pitch was bathed in unseasonably warm – but low – autumnal sunshine. Electing to play into the sun in the first half, Donaghadee were quickly into their stride and with forwards Kerrie Turtle and Ruth causing the home defence problems early on. Donaghadee earned themselves a penalty corner which Carolyn Scott struck low to the right beyond the outstretched foot of the Cooke keeper to get the scoring off the mark.

With Cooke playing much of their hockey through the middle of the pitch, central midfielder Ali Lawther needed to be on her mettle to keep defenders Suzie Ferguson, Claire Stewart and Lisa Higgins protected, with additional support coming from Kerry Kennedy, Kerry Savage and Paige Reilly in midfield. Donaghadee’s lead was slender however, with Siobhan McAdam called into action several times in the first half to make necessary saves to keep the home side at bay.

After the half time restart, Donaghadee were a little slow off the mark and Cooke were awarded a penalty corner following an infringement in the Dee circle early in the second half. The home team managed to scramble the ball over the line to make it 1-1 to set up an interesting finish to the game; with both sides intent on attack and searching for the winner, the game quickly became very stretched. Lisa pushed up from the back into a more attacking role for the Dee and, ably assisted by Victoria Speers, the extra body helped Donaghadee to regain some of the midfield ascendency they had enjoyed in the first half. Up front, Maura Hennessey was proving a willing runner down the wide channels to keep the forward momentum going, and it was from another penalty corner where Donaghadee got their second goal – Kerry Kennedy taking advantage of a crowded circle to slot home to make it 2-1. There were more chances for both sides but with no more goals to add, the Dee girls were delighted to continue their superb start to the season with a fourth win from four played.

Junior League 9: Bangor 1-0 Donaghadee LHC 2XI
Donaghadee LHC Second XI made the short trip to the Aurora to play Bangor Seconds last Friday night. The game got underway with strong attacking work by Natasha Cameron and Karen Fegan on the left, with Donaghadee storming into the Bangor circle to give Karen a great shot at goal, only for it to be saved by the keeper. Bangor were quick to take the resulting hit out and they worked the ball towards the Dee circle. Tori Rollo put in two solid block tackles to break down Bangor’s attack.

Shortly after, a quick dash to the circle by the home side caught Donaghadee off guard, resulting in Bangor coming away with the opening goal of the game. Bangor continued to force play into the Dee’s half and called on Amy Long and Ruth Howell to put in goal-saving tackles to clear the ball wide. Donaghadee were determined to do some attacking of their own and a great ball from Paige Reilly found Victoria Speers deep in Bangor’s half, resulting in a short corner being won as the ball struck a Bangor foot in the circle. A strong first time strike by Melissa Rollo was unfortunately deflected by the Bangor keeper. The play was end to end and Donaghadee’s keeper Janice McVeigh put in several diving saves to keep the score 1-0 to Bangor at half time.

The second half got off to a fast start with Tasha Paxton storming through Bangor’s defence towards the circle, only to be heavily tackled, resulting in Donaghadee losing Tasha to injury. Despite this blow, Dee midfield players Deborah Gilmore and Carmen van der Schyff worked continuously to tackle back and put Bangor under pressure. A great interception by Teegan Greer gave the Dee another attacking chance but to no avail; Donaghadee unfortunate to be denied their much deserved equaliser. Final score 1-0 to Bangor, with a great team effort shown by all of the Donaghadee girls.

Many thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring duties. Next up for the 1st XI is a trip to the North coast on Saturday for their match against newly promoted Ballycastle, while the Seconds are at home to Instonians 2nd XI.

4/10/14 DLHC 1XI v PSNI and DLHC 2XI v PSNI

2014-15 DLHC 1XI

DLHC 1st XI 2014/15 Back row (l-r) Tasha Paxton, Suzie Ferguson, Ali Lawther, Carolyn Scott, Siobhan McAdam, Claire Stewart, Kerry Kennedy, Paige Reilly, Brian McKee Front row (l-r) Lisa Higgins, Kerry Savage, Ruth Kennedy (Capt), Kerrie Turtle, Victoria Speers, Maura Hennessey

Senior League 4: DLHC 1XI 2-0 PSNI 1st XI

Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1st XI were at home to PSNI on Saturday – the first of a home double header for the Dee against PSNI, with the 2nds against the same opposition in the second slot of the day. Confidence was high and optimism plentiful, with DLHC 1st XI having won their opening two league matches against South Antrim and Ballynahinch. PSNI came down from Senior 3 at the end of last season and were therefore an unknown quantity for captain Ruth Kennedy and her team but Dee coach Brian McKee was clear in his instruction to continue trying to play the expansive passing game which has stood them in good stead so far this season.

With Ali Lawther and Kerrie Turtle both returning to Donaghadee’s starting line up, the Dee had their strongest team available for the fixture. The girls were quickly into their collective stride, with Lisa Higgins, Kerry Savage and Ruth Kennedy finding joy down the left and Kerry Kennedy and Carolyn Scott combining on the right to stretch the visitors. Kerry K has started the season in scintillating fashion with 3 goals in 2 games, and her run of good form continued when she worked some room for herself at the top of the opposition circle to unleash a stunning reverse stick shot into the roof of the net to open the scoring for Donaghadee.

PSNI responded with much of their play coming through the middle; fullbacks Suzie Ferguson and Claire Stewart were quick to snub out any forays into the last third from the visitors. One ball did sneak through however and a lone PSNI forward found herself one on one with Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam. She failed to control though, and Siobhan was able to watch the ball over the back line to safety without having to make a save.

Donaghadee were making good use of their subs to keep things fresh with Paige Reilly slotting into Claire’s position – proving herself a more than able deputy in the defensive role beside Suzie. The relentless Donaghadee pressure continued with Victoria Speers working tirelessly in tandem with Ali in midfield to keep the momentum going, with forwards Maura Hennessey and Tasha Paxton coming on to add extra pace to the Dee attacks. Centre forward Kerrie added goal number two to the Dee tally when she went through on the PSNI keeper and, while there were certainly chances for more, Donaghadee were delighted with the final 2-0 scoreline to keep their 100% record intact.

Junior League 9: DLHC 2nd XI 0-1 PSNI

Donaghadee LHC’s 2nd XI were straight on to the pitch following the 1st XI’s win looking to emulate the performance of their clubmates. With many of PSNI’s players playing in both matches, Donaghadee were able to start the match strongly and broke through the middle of the pitch, with Natasha Cameron having a shot at goal within the first minute of play. This opening shot was saved by the PSNI keeper, clearing it wide to force play back into the Dee’s half. A strong ball from the half way line found a PSNI player free in the circle to have a shot at goal. Donaghadee keeper Janice McVeigh was quick to react with an excellent save, keeping the score at 0-0.

A string of good passes between Emily Morris and Jan Morrow got Donaghadee back in to the PSNI circle for another attempt on goal, which again was cleared by the PSNI keeper. PSNI repeatedly forced play down the Dee’s left side, putting continual pressure on defensive players Melissa Rollo and Lisa Alexander to break down the attacks. A quick switch of play by PSNI to the far side of the pitch then called on Tori Rollo to defend her goal with a strong reverse tackle, stopping the ball making it to the circle. Both teams had a number of chances at scoring but the score remained 0-0 at half time.

Donaghadee came out fighting in the second half with captain Deborah Gilmour and Carmen van der Schyff getting through a lot of work in midfield to try and release centre forward Karen Fegan high in the PSNI circle. The visitors’ defence didn’t falter however and any through balls by Donaghadee were coming straight back. A PSNI attack resulted in a penalty corner being awarded. A first time strike allowed PSNI get off the mark to a 1-0 lead. The Dee central defensive duo of Amy Long and Ruth Howell were working hard to keep the play in the home side’s favour, with Emily doing well to get another few shots on target. The PSNI keeper stood firm however and Donaghadee failed to get the ball in the back of the net.

The final whistle went just as PSNI were awarded a penalty corner. With 10 PSNI players lining up around the circle against 5 Donaghadee defenders, the outcome seemed inevitable. First runner Teegan Greer thundered to the top of the circle and intercepted the ball however, clearing it wide and denying PSNI a second goal, signalling the end of the match and a final scoreline of 1-0 to the PSNI.

Many thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring both matches. Next week, DLHC 1st XI are away to Cooke while the 2nd XI are away to Bangor 2nd XI for the second time this season following the amalgamation of Junior 9a and 9b. The club would like to wish 2nd XI player Hannah McAdam all the best as she heads off to play for her university team at Coleraine – adding an extra interest to the Donaghadee v Coleraine match in a few weeks’ time!

27/9/14 Senior League 4: Ballynahinch v DLHC 1XI

Senior League 4: Ballynahinch 2-3 DLHC 1st XI

Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1st XI were away to Ballynahinch Ladies last Saturday for their second league fixture of the 2014/15 campaign, with the Dee looking to build on their opening 4-1 win at home to South Antrim the previous week. Midfield lynchpin Ali Lawther and centre forward stalwart Kerrie Turtle were both missing for this game but it is testament to the burgeoning strength in depth that Donaghadee are beginning to enjoy that the gaps were ably filled by last season’s 2nd XI top goalscorer Maura Hennessey and Dee newcomer Paige Reilly.

Donaghadee were quick off the mark from the opening whistle, playing some slick passing hockey and putting Ballynahinch under considerable pressure all over the pitch when the home team had the ball. The midfield trio of Paige, Kerry Kennedy and Kerry Savage were working really well to distribute the ball and get wide players Victoria Speers and Ruth Kennedy into the game. This pressure translated into an early penalty corner for Donaghadee and injector Kerry S sent the ball out to last week’s 2-goal Kerry K. She responded with a bullet of a shot which gave the Hinch defence no chance and gave Donaghadee the lead. Maura got in on the scoring act shortly after following strong play down the left, finishing the move with a unreachable shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-0 to Donaghadee. Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam was called into action to pull off a couple of saves as the half drew to a close, with defensive players Claire Stewart, Suzie Ferguson and Lisa Higgins working beautifully together to clear calmly when required.

As the teams turned round after the half time whistle, Ballynahinch regrouped and began to put some pressure on the Donaghadee defence. With one attack hitting a Dee foot the the defensive circle, Ballynahinch capitalised on the resulting penalty corner to make it 2-1. Donaghadee coach Brian McKee was delighted with the Dee response however; in seasons past there has been a tendency towards capitulation in similar situations but last weekend Donaghadee not only dug in but they kept their shape and continued to play the passing game as laid out by Brian. Carmen van der Schyff came on for Maura, which left last season’s top goalscorer Carolyn Scott to push up into a higher position. Ruth made a wonderful mazy run down the middle of the pitch, drawing several defenders to her and she released a pinpoint pass to Carolyn who was left one on one with the Hinch keeper; the forward finishing cleanly to make it 3-1 to Donaghadee. Ballynahinch did break to score one more but it was too little, too late for the home side and the Dee were delighted to take the three points and make it two wins from two.

Donaghadee 2nd XI had no match this weekend as their opponents, North Down 5th XI conceded and both Dee teams now look forward to Saturday’s double-bill home fixtures against PSNI 1st and 2nd XI. All former players, Vets and supporters are invited to join the teams at Bangor Grammar for the matches and for home match drinks back in Donaghadee after the final whistle.
