Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club bade farewell to the 2013/14 season last Saturday night with their End of Season do in The Moat, Donagahdee. As has been the enthusiasm all season which enabled the Dee to field two full teams for the first time in several decades, there was a great turn out, with only a couple of players unable to attend the barbeque; indeed it was lovely to see former players Alison McNeice and Laura Gibson also joining in the festivities.
Outgoing 1st XI Captain Suzie Ferguson opened the prizegiving with outgoing 2nd XI Captain Lisa Alexander on hand to award the prizes on her team. The 2nd XI Top Goalscorer was awarded to Maura Hennesey who scored 10 of the Seconds 17 goals this season, and she also picked up a second award, having been voted Captain’s Player of the Year. The young players were also well represented, with Amy Long picking up the Best Newcomer award, Jan Morrow receiving 2nd XI’s Most Improved Player and Angela Parker awarded Best Junior. Teegan Greer earned the recognition of her team mates by being voted 2nd XI Players’ Player of the Year, having played outfield, in goal, and quite often while carrying one injury or another over the course of the season!
The Captains then moved on to presenting the 1st XI with their awards: first up was Carolyn Scott receiving Top Goalscorer, the remarkable 5 goals in one match adding to her overall tally of 12 for the season. Ali Lawther was awarded 1st XI Players’ Player of the Year for her hard work in midfield, defender Claire Stewart received 1st XI’s Captain’s Player of the Year with Kerrie Turtle receiving the 1st XI’s Most Improved Player award. Carolyn and Siobhan McAdam were both delighted to be rewarded for their behind-the-scenes work with the jointly awarded Overall Contribution to DLHC prize. Special mention was then made to Jill Dennison who made herself available at short notice for both the 1st XI and 2nd XI when required.
Suzie and Lisa then thanked the DLHC men who all played a valuable part in the season: Brian McKee, Mike Smyth and William McAdam all provided invaluable coaching, umpiring and help over the course of the season, all of which is very much appreciated by everyone in the club. The last presentation to be made was the handing over of the two Captain’s Shields to incoming 1st XI Captain Ruth Kennedy and 2nd XI Captain Deborah Gilmore before the official part of the evening was brought to a close and those present saw off the season in the usual DLHC style.
