19/3/16 Queens 5-1 Donaghadee LHC 2XI

Junior League 8: Queens 5-1 Donaghadee LHC 2XI
Donaghadee 2XI travelled to the Dub on Saturday to play Queens 5XI on a sunny spring day. Having recently played Queens in the home fixture which finished in a 1-1 draw Donaghadee were hopeful of gaining some points from this fixture in their continued league campaign.

Both teams began the match with gusto however it wasn’t long before the Queens’ strikers put themselves ahead with a goal from open play. Anxious not to let the opposition get too far ahead too early, Donaghadee’s midfield trio of Karen Fegan, Emily Morris and Tasha Paxton pressed ahead looking to feed the ball through to the young forwards of Elle Fegan and Angela Parker.

Queens were quick to stamp out the forwards’ efforts and turn the ball around exerting pressure on Melissa Rollo and Deborah Gilmour who were alert to the Queens’ advances. Although Queens added another goal to their tally, Tasha picked up a loose ball and carried it forward, slotting the ball past the Queens’ keeper. As the half time whistle blew with Donaghadee only 2-1 down, they were still well in contention in the game and looked to level matters up in the second half.

Queens however had other ideas and opened the second half with a period of sustained pressure in the Donaghadee circle however due to very tight marking and channelling of the Queens’ forwards by the experienced Dee defence of Debbie Findlater, Tori Rollo and Lisa Alexander and some exemplary diving saves by keeper Janice McVeigh, Queens just managed to win themselves long corners and free hits outside the circle as opposed to a goal.

Although Donaghadee thought they were well prepared with two extra players Kate Pounder and Lisa Higgins who slotted in playing various positions throughout the game adding skill and fresh legs where required, Queens had five extra bodies to choose from which resulted in Donaghadee being unable to compete with their momentum. The home side added another goal during open play followed by two late penalty corner conversions sealing their victory at 5-1.

Many thanks to Nicola Patton for umpiring.  Donaghadee enjoy a free weekend for Easter and then resume their league action against North Down 5XI away on Saturday 2nd April.Donaghadee 2XI travelled to the Dub on Saturday to play Queens 5XI on a sunny spring day.
