Junior League 8: North Down 5XI 5-2 DLHC 2XI
Donaghadee 2XI met North Down 5XI for the third time this season last Saturday and although North Down had won the previous meetings Donaghadee went into the game positive having gained valuable experience from the matches the previous weeks.
Donaghade started the game well with the midfielders Karen Fegan, Caitland Crockett and Tasha Paxton trying to break through the North Down defence. As North Down made a break, the Dee defence Debbie Findlater, Lisa Alexander and Tori Rollo cleared the ball to Elle Fegan and Angela Parker who were doing a lot of running to try and stretch the home side.
Some neat interplay saw them carry the ball to the attacking circle where Karen Fegan was able to score from a cross from the right. North Down were quick to retaliate by winning themselves several penalty corners though and through well rehearsed routines, slipped three past the Dee defence before half time.
Dee stepped up their play with some impressive attacking runs from both Nicki Robinson and Kate Pounder but were denied any reward for their efforts. North Down retaliated with some neat passing work and, carving their way past Melissa Rollo and Lisa Alexander, they got a neat deflection by their left wing in the circle.
After the turn around Dee were quick on the attack with Caitland and Tasha weaving though the North Down defence with a cross to Karen Fegan who secured her second goal of the match. North Down were quick to pressure Dee’s defence; as Janice McVeigh saved their shot Melissa cleared the ball but was it intercepted by a North Down player who won another penalty corrner. The initial strike was saved but not cleared and North swept the rebound into the back of the net, leaving the final score 5-2 to the home side.
Many thanks to Carolyn Scott for umpiring. The 2XI are next in action at home to Ballynahinch 2XI on Saturday, passback 1pm. The 1XI wrap up their season away to Newcastle on Wednesday night secure in the knowledge that they have enough points to ensure their Senior 3 safety for next season.
