Junior League 8: Donaghadee LHC 2XI 0-1 Pegasus 4XI
Donaghadee 2XI welcomed Pegasus 4XI to Bangor Grammar on Saturday for their final home match of the 2015/16 season. With last week’s encounter against Ballynahinch conceded by the opposition, Donaghadee were glad to get the match underway to enjoy their penultimate league fixture of the year.
Donaghadee started the match strongly making much of the early attacking play. Caitland Crockett frequently found forwards Maura Hennessey and Angela Parker well positioned to put early pressure on the Pegasus defence although a super shot from Maura was unfortunately denied by the Pegasus goalkeeper.
On a separate attack Emily Morris spotted Karen Fegan positioned on the left post and quickly played the ball to Karen who deflected the ball into the back of the net just as the umpire’s whistle blew having spotted an infringement outside the circle by the defence a moment earlier. Donaghadee didn’t manage to capitalise on the resulting free.
After the half time team talk Pegasus appeared to resume the game with increased gusto and exerted more pressure on the Donaghadee defence. Lisa Alexander and Debbie Findlater teamed up well with Tasha Paxton to cut out many advances ably flanked by a combination of Lisa Higgins, Elle Fegan and Kate Pounder. During one particular attack down the right Pegasus managed to slip the ball quickly and their left wing obliged by slotting the ball past keeper Janice McVeigh.
Donaghadee pressed ahead to try to square the match up with both Carmen Van Der Schyff and Angela making successful in-roads up the left side of the pitch but the Pegasus defence were alert. Although Donaghadee earned themselves a couple of penalty corners in the second half the Pegasus defence were very quick off their line to deny them a chance to level the match. Nearing the end of the match with Pegasus attempting to put the game out of Donaghadee’s reach, Janice pulled off one of her now customary diving saves in order to keep the girls in red and green in contention but time ultimately ran out.
Somewhat disappointingly for the Dee the final score read 1-0, although the team had enjoyed a competitive match in sunny conditions. Many thanks to Brian McKee for umpiring. Donaghadee 2XI play Saintfield away next Saturday for their final match of the season.
