REPORT | 26 Sept 2020: DLHC 1XI 1-3 Instonians and NICS 0-0 DLHC 2XI

Tasha got the 1XI’s goal against Instonians

Senior 3: DLHC 1XI 1-3 Instonians
It was a disappointing – and ultimately frustrating – start to the league campaign for the 1XI of Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club on Saturday thanks to a 3-1 defeat at home to Instonians.

The team started brightly and much of the first quarter saw good hockey from the Dee with the ball being pinged about with confidence.

Great work down the right led to the opening, with Tasha Moore cushioning a lovely guided ball across the Inst keeper and in off the far post to give Donaghadee the lead.

Instonians equalised in the second quarter when a lucky deflection wrongfooted the Dee defence and from there on in, Donaghadee started making heavy weather of things.

With the Dee seemingly unable to clear their lines, Instonians capitalised with another deflection to take the lead seconds before the half time whistle.

There was no lack of endeavour from the home side but with passes not going quite to stick, it was really difficult to mount any sustained pressure or cause the Instonians defence any real danger.

Down the other end, the visitors rounded off their scoring with one more to give the scoreline a comprehensive look and one to chalk up to experience for the Dee.

It was just one of those days where things just did not quite click for the team but there were plenty of positives to take from the match and Donaghadee will be looking forward to putting that one behind them when they travel to Limavady next week.

With thanks to Andy Edwards for umpiring and to Alison McNeice for Home Covid Officer duties.

Junior 8: NICS 4XI 0-0 DLHC 2XI
The first match of the league may have played out as a 0-0 draw but it wasn’t anything short of exciting. With the sun splitting the trees surrounding the NICS pitch on a lovely mild, end of September Saturday, lots of the players were caught out wearing their warm baselayers!

Donaghadee played brilliant defensively to protect stand-in goalkeeper Claire Horne who kindly volunteered to put the pads on with regular 2XI keeper Janice McVeigh unavailable due to work commitments.

What a way for Claire to mark her league debut for the club! Despite it being her first time in goals, she barely needed the Dee defence’s assistance; playing an absolutely sensational game and saving multiple shots even when NICS had 3 consecutive penalty corners just before the final whistle. Claire held her nerve so well and never once crumbled under the pressure.

Donaghadee had some great chances of their own, especially from the wide positions but despite breaking through the NICS defence a few times, unfortunately they just weren’t able to get that goal needed to take home 3 points.

The final quarter proved difficult for Donaghadee with the home side pinning the Dee back in the defensive half for much of the time and the whole team was needed to thwart the chances that NICS had in the circle but the unit remained solid in thier defending, with the midfielders working very hard to get back to help clear the lines.

It was a tough match but as a team with a lot of new faces, there are certainly signs that the players are beginning to gel with Donaghadee putting up a great fight with every player putting in maximum effort to start the season with a point!

Player of the match definitely goes to newbie Claire Horne – the team definitely owes her a few (socially distant) drinks for those brilliant saves!

Thanks to NICS for providing a second umpire for this match. The 2XI are next in action at home to Holywood 2XI on Saturday, pass back 1pm. Covid regulations will be in force for this match so please check the club’s social media if you wish to attend as a spectator.

14 September 2020: DLHC Pre-season: An Overview

Following the completion of 5 weeks of fitness on the hallowed turf of Crommelin Park, Donaghadee Ladies have enjoyed getting back on the astro albeit in a slightly nomadic fashion.

With their home pitch at Bangor Grammar not yet available for use, record numbers have been turning out to training at Londonderry Park, Newtownards in an unfamiliar Tuesday evening time slot as new coach Willie McAdam seeks to find his best combinations for the two teams.

With nearly a dozen new players joining the Dee ranks for the 20/21 season, there have already been four pre-season friendlies which has allowed everyone to get a run out in the red and green. The 1XI faced stiff opposition against Ballymena 2XI last week, going down 5-1 in a game that was less one-sided than the score suggests.

A torrid second quarter saw the Dee concede 3 in quick succession and while they were able to pull one back in the final quarter, it was too late to take the comprehensive look off the score line. The Firsts are back in action on Saturday away to North Down 2XI in a game they will want to use to improve on previous performance.

The 2XI have been busy too with plenty of action over the last couple of weeks: a draw against NICS 4XI, a 2-0 victory over neighbours Bangor 4XI and a narrow defeat away to Saintfield 3XI adding to the full range of results. Each game has been really competitive with the team improving each time so it should prove to be an exciting season for the Seconds

Ulster Hockey have recently released the league fixtures for 2020/21 and both Donaghadee teams get underway on 26th September, all being well. The 1XI will welcome Instonians while the 2XI are scheduled to return to Playball, Stormont to take on NICS 4XI. Full fixtures are available at http://www.DonaghadeeLHC.co.uk.

In other welcome news the pitch at BGS should be ready to within the next week or two, so not only will training return to the usual Wednesday night, 7.30-9pm slot, both teams should be able to fulfil their league fixtures in the right place at the right time.

17 August 2020: DLHC Back on the pitch

Preparations for the 2020/21 season are well underway for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club with four weeks’ bootcamp completed and preseason stick work due to start this Wednesday evening at Bangor Grammar.

It has been fantastic to see not only all the regular faces reporting for duty over the last number of weeks, but also a number of new players looking to make their mark at the club during the incoming season. Ulster Hockey issued the welcome news late last week that they are tentatively planning league action to get underway on the weekend of 26th September, so this will provide a welcome focus to upcoming training.

With two teams playing in Ulster Hockey leagues, DLHC has plenty to offer all females of 15 or over, regardless of age or experience. Both teams will be guided by new Head Coach William McAdam, who brings with him a wealth of experience, having coached the Coleraine 2XI squad which won 3 successive titles (Junior 6, Junior 5 and Junior 4) between 2016 and 2019, and which reached the Junior Cup final in 2017, losing out only to Omagh who won the league above that year.

Willie has also enjoyed success with the Ulster Masters, coaching the O50 Ladies who were crowned InterPro champions in 2018 and 2019 – a feat he hoped to emulate in 2020 before the pandemic put paid to all hockey earlier this year, so there are high hopes for him working his magic at the Dee!

While no fixtures have yet been announced, there will undoubtedly be plenty of action round the Greater Belfast area, with the odd foray further afield, with the club’s 1XI retaining their spot in Senior 3, and the Seconds currently competing in Junior 8. All home match action will once again be played at the excellent facilities at Bangor Grammar.

Past, present and future members of DLHC are welcome to join in at preseason on Wednesdays from 7.30pm at BGS and all new faces are more than welcome; please contact dlhc@hotmail.co.uk for more information or get in touch via social media to make sure the club has all participants registered to adhere to current Covid guidelines.

30 July 2020: Pre-season back with a bang!

Lovely night for it!

We are back with a bang, with two excellent pre-season bootcamp sessions at Crommelin Park in Donaghadee now done and dusted.

More than two full teams’ worth of players have turned out the last two Wednesdays to be put through their paces by personal trainer Mal Clarke with fast-moving sets of various exercises, all done with suitable social distancing in place.

It has been fantastic to see a number of new faces amongst the assembled group as the club looks forward to starting the season proper as soon as Ulster Hockey decree it possible.

There is as yet no start date for league matches but we hope to return to the pitch at Bangor Grammar on Wednesday 19th August. Until then, there’s always another two fitness sessions to keep any Wednesday night blues away: 7.30-8.30pm at Crommelin Park, Donaghadee.

We are always delighted to see new players for both our 1XI and 2XI teams; please contact dlhc@hotmail.co.uk for more information and to get the required health declaration form to allow participation.

Tactics? Formations? The latest Jack Reacher…?

7 July 2020: All change at the helm for DLHC

After 10 years at the helm, Brian McKee has decided to step back as Head Coach of DLHC. Having overseen our transition from the hallowed shale of Crommelin Park to current luxurious home at BGS via Bangor Academy, Brian’s unfailing enthusiasm, love of the game and vast experience has guided many of our players’ hockey careers.

From his early days in charge when the victories were (even) hard(er) to come by – the last minute 4-3 win away to Ballynahinch in the final game before Christmas on a bog of a pitch marking our first win of that particular season, followed by the exultant celebrations in the Tivoli one particular highlight that springs to mind – right to last season’s premature final whistle, Brian has lived and breathed the Dee for a decade, giving his time and expertise freely and always managing to find the positives, even after the direst of defeats (and there have been a few over the years!)

We look forward to celebrating his contribution to the club as soon as we’re able to do it properly in person, but for now, a heartfelt thank you to him from all the players – hopefully watching from the sideline with a cuppa in hand or after-match pint will be all the more enjoyable having not spent 70 minutes going through the wringer in the dugout!

As we bid a fond farewell to Brian, we are delighted to announce that Willie McAdam is joining the club as Head Coach for the incoming season.

Willie brings with him extensive experience which has reaped no small amount of silverware, having been joint coach of the Coleraine 2XI squad which won 3 successive titles (Junior 6, Junior 5 and Junior 4) between 2016 and 2019, and which reached the Junior Cup final in 2017, losing out only to Omagh who won the league above that year.

He has also enjoyed success with the Ulster Masters, coaching the O50 Ladies who were crowned InterPro champions in 2018 and 2019 – a feat he hoped to emulate in 2020 before the pandemic put paid to all hockey earlier this year.

We have no doubt that we as a club will benefit massively under Willie’s tutelage and who knows – some of the magic Ws might even start to rub off on us!

Willie has long been a friend and supporter of DLHC so we’re absolutely thrilled he’s now joining us in an official capacity. Welcome aboard, Willie and Mon the Dee!

Willie and Siobhan with Masters silverware

REPORT | DLHC 1XI 1-1 Cookstown, Saintfield 2-1 DLHC 2XI and Ulster Representation

DLHC 1XI v Cookstown, 7th March 2020
DLHC 1XI v Cookstown, 7th March 2020

Senior League 3: Donaghadee LHC 1XI 1-1 Cookstown 1XI
After a tough few weeks when Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI have been on the wrong end of two very close results, Captain Helen Hooks had a strong team at her disposal with several key players making a welcome return to the side.

Cookstown are currently second in the league and proved to be tough opposition back in November when the mid Ulster side ran out 2-1 winners but with a number of Dee players not having played in that fixture, hopes were high that something could be taken from this match.

Early hopes certainly weren’t disappointed with Donaghadee piling on the pressure at every opportunity, and for long stretches in the first half, the Dee had the visitors penned in their own half. The midfield set the tone, with Chloe McGookin snapping into tackles on the right and Lisa Higgins intercepting long balls, short passes and everything in between on the left.

With Kerry Kennedy and Helen providing the flair and high workrate in the centre of the pitch, it wasn’t long before Donaghadee started to threaten the Cookstown circle. Tasha Moore caused problems on the right wing, with numerous long corners and penalty corners for Donaghadee keeping the attacking pressure on.

The opening goal came from open play however thanks to a super through ball from Kerry which forward Carolyn Scott pounced on: her quick turn and snap shot from the middle of the circle firing the ball high into the net before the Cookstown keeper had time to react to put the Dee 1-0 to the good.

In similar fashion to recent weeks, Donaghadee found themselves with defending to do in the second half, and it was great to have the steadying sticks of Amy Long, Sarah Hooks and Paige Reilly working in tandem to protect Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam. Laura Boyle too, sweeping in front of the back three, did well to limit the chances afforded to the lively Cookstown centre forward.

Cookstown kept pressing and eventually the pressure told: a penalty corner converted to bring the score level. Donaghadee did have their own chances at the other end but the Cookstown defence were up to the task, and the game finished in an honourable draw.

While Donaghadee felt they had the chances to win the game, a point against the side who have occupied first or second position in the league all season is definitely worth being pleased about! Thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring. The final match of the season will be away to PSNI, date to be confirmed.

Senior League as at 9th March 2020

Junior 9: Saintfield 3XI 2-1 Donaghadee LHC 2XI
Despite the team going down two goals, they were able to pull one back through a Natalie Jamieson strike, with thanks to Emily Morris for travelling to umpire.

Dee represented at upcoming Masters Interpros
It is with great pleasure and pride that the club can announce that Donaghadee will be well-represented at the upcoming Masters Interpros with Carolyn Scott (forward, O40s), Janice McVeigh (GK, O45s) and Siobhan McAdam (GK, O50s) all being selected to represent Ulster in their age-groups. Well done, girls and best of luck! The tournament takes place at Garryduff Sports Centre, Cork from 17-19 April.

REPORT | 28 Feb 2020: Parkview 1-1 DLHC 1XI and NICS 5-0 DLHC 2XI

Carolyn got the Dee’s goal against Parkview

Senior 3: Parkview 1-1 DLHC 1XI
Following two very tight defeats against PSNI and Enniskillen, Donaghadee Ladies’ 1XI headed off on their travels last Friday night as they made for Ballyclare in search of points against Parkview.

There was a youthful look about the team, with no fewer than 6 regular starters for the 2XI stepping up to play their part in this match and from the first whistle Donaghadee dominated for long parts; Parkview pinned in their defensive half for much of the first half.

Donaghadee were finding lots of joy down the right hand side in the early part, with young Katie McKee flying up the touchline at will, making good progress finishing with accurate crosses or driving along the bye line as she tried to pick out a fellow forward in a dangerous area.

One such endeavour almost came off beautifully when Vicky O’Neill met an incoming ball, but the Parkview keeper was off her line quickly to snuff out the danger, the ball rebounding well wide to safety.

Emily Morris, too, played an invaluable role on the right: the amount of work she got through in midfield was a true example to her team mates which belied the number of minutes on the pitch this season, her appearances severely restricted due to an ongoing back problem.

Donaghadee did their best to switch play and Helen Hooks was pulling the strings on the left of midfield. She managed to find a number of probing balls down the line for Molly McKee to run on to as the Dee tried to catch the home side out but again, the Parkview No 1 was in good enough form to keep the efforts out.

Early in the second quarter Natalie Jamieson, playing in the middle of the defence, made a burst forward and the ball found its way through to Carolyn Scott in the circle. From what looked like much too tight an angle wide right, Carolyn pulled off a pinpoint shot beyond the outstretched foot of the keeper that riccocheted off the left upright and into the back of the net to give Donaghadee the lead.

As the second half got underway Parkview enjoyed one of their purple patches of the match and the Dee defence were called in to action: Amy Long and Sarah Hooks were both solid as a rock in the heart of defence, ensuring Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam remained a virtual bystander for long periods.

Jan Morrow too played an invaluable role in the centre of midfield, sweeping from side to side when required, and bursting forward at will to support the front players as they tried to keep Parkview pinned in. The tactic worked well until the home side managed a late break that resulted in a penalty corner.

With the whistle blown for full time, the whole Parkview team piled forward in an attempt to prevent the ball going dead. The initial shot was saved by Siobhan but in the resulting melee the ball was nudged over the line, much to the delight of the home team. Final score 1-1.

Another case of so near and yet so far for the Firsts, but massive thanks to the girls who stepped up to play – most of whom played the following day for the 2XI when they took on NICS 4XI. Thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring duties.

The 1XI will be looking for a good performance this Saturday to sign off this season’s home games when they welcome Cookstown to BGS, pass back 1pm.

Junior 9: NICS 4XI 5-0 DLHC 2XI
DLHC 2XI went down 5-0 to an experienced NICS side, and they play their final match of the season on Saturday away to Saintfield.

REPORT | 22 Feb 2020: Enniskillen 3-2 DLHC 1XI

Senior 3: Enniskillen 3-2 DLHC 1XI
With the winter weather biting hard, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI made the journey west on Saturday to take on Enniskillen in the latest Senior 3 match.

The two teams played out a 1-1 draw when they met at Bangor Grammar in October, and there was a single point between the two in the league table before passback so all indications suggested it should be another tight match.

In extremity-numbingly cold (and at times, very wet) conditions the opening exchanges were somewhat sluggish, with the ball running slowly on a sodden pitch and players struggling to keep hands warm.

Slightly unusually, Donaghadee were quick out of the blocks, winning an early penalty corner to test the home defence. With the initial strike parried by the Enniskillen keeper, Tasha Moore pounced on the rebound to put Donaghadee a goal to the good.

In a tale of penalty corners, Enniskillen then scored two from their set piece to give themselves the advantage going in to the half time break, with the Dee determined to come away with something to show for the long drive.

The second half was an open affair with both teams having chances, but good keeping at both ends, and the odd wayward shot missing its mark, kept the score as it was until deep into the third quarter.

With Donaghadee creating an attack down the left, a good cross found Vicky O’Neill at the top of the attacking circle and with time to take a shot, her well placed strike evaded the Enniskillen keeper to nestle in the far corner of the net: 2-2.

With conditions not improving, it looked very much as though proceedings were heading for a 2-2 draw – probably a fair result on balance of play – until an unmarked Enniskillen player popped up at the Dee back post to sweep home an unbelievably late winner – the home team bagging the winner with less than a minute on the clock. FInal score 3-2 to Enniskillen with thanks to them for providing two umpires and the most convivial after match tea.

The 1XI are next in action on Friday night with a trip to Ballyclare to play Parkview, while the 2XI head to Stormont to take on NICS 5XI, pass back in that match 4pm.

REPORT | 1 Feb 2020: Kilkeel 4-0 DLHC 1XI and DLHC 2XI 0-3 Holywood

Dee 1XI keeper Siobhan McAdam

Senior 3: Kilkeel 4-0 DLHC 1XI
1XI lose to league leaders
DLHC 1XI were on their travels last Saturday, heading to South Down to take on league leaders Kilkeel in the late shift with a 4pm passback.

The first half saw a strong defensive performance from the team, with the Dee rearguard repelling any Kilkeel attacks before the home side forced any real danger.

At the other end, Donaghadee created a number of chances of their own; the midfield and forwards linking well as they tried to create the opening to take the lead.

It was Kilkeel who snuck one in from a penalty corner right on the stroke of half time however, taking a slender 1-0 lead as the whistle went for the break.

There was little to choose between the teams for much of the second half with both teams trading attacks and both defences playing well, with the main difference being one Kilkeel player scoring three powerful strikes to take the final tally to 4-0.

While the scoreline would suggest otherwise, it was a solid team performance from the Dee which, on another day, would have reaped better reward. Thanks to Kilkeel for providing a second umpire on the day.

The 1XI are back at BGS on Saturday when they welcome PSNI for a 1pm pass back.

Senior League 3 as at 3rd Feb 2020

Junior League 9: DLHC 2XI 0-3 Holywood 2XI
Donaghadee started really brightly and enjoyed a very strong first quarter; it wasn’t obvious that the team was a player down and certainly didn’t feel like it either, with all the players on the pitch putting in maximum effort.

The play was end to end for Donaghadee, with hit outs from defenders Finlay Mitchell, Floss Scott and Jemma Thompson working well to distribute the ball out wide to midfielders Vicky O’Neill, Natalie Jamison and Natalie Brown. These three were working brilliantly together as they tried to create dangerous attacking moves high up the pitch.

Despite excellent effort from the whole team, especially the forwards Kerrie Turtle and Carmen van der Schyff, the score remained 0-0 until Holywood put the ball in the back of the Dee net via a deflection from a Donaghadee stick while the team was defending a penalty corner to make the score 1-0 to Holywood.

Donaghadee kept their heads up however and the midfielders and forwards had some great attempts to score, but just narrowly missed the chances. Holywood then scored in the 3rd quarter bringing them 2-0 up despite incredible efforts from Dee keeper Janice McVeigh.

A second deflection in the Donaghadee circle unfortunately turned a hopeful Holywood shot into the Dee goal (the defenders must have been feeling generous on Saturday!) and the match ended 3-0 to Holywood.

Thanks to Marc Jeffrey for umpiring and well done to the whole team for an amazing effort in playing their hearts out to make up for the missing player. The 2XI now have a break before they play Bangor 3XI at home on Saturday 15th February.
