30 September 2017: Cooke 1-0 Donaghadee LHC 1XI and Donaghadee LHC 2XI 4-0 NICS

DLHC 2XI 2017/18
Back row (l-r): Lisa Higgins, Sarah Harkness, Tasha Paxton, Janice McVeigh (c), Natalie Jamieson, Emily Morris, Carmen van der Schyff
Front row (l-r): Deborah Gilmore, Kerrie Turtle, Georgia Ferguson, Rebecca Bolton, Vicky O’Neill, Vickie Pollock

Senior 3: Cooke 1-0 DLHC 1XI
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI were aiming to get points on the board for the third week in a row when they travelled to Shaw’s Bridge to play league newcomers Cooke on Saturday afternoon.

With no changes to the team from previous weeks, Donaghadee dominated the opening 15 minutes and striker Carolyn Scott forced a good opening save from the Cooke keeper when Kerry Kennedy provided an excellent through ball. Carolyn then set Leanna Young free but she too was unable to take advantage.

Emma McGimpsey was next to have a go – with the keeper off her line and eliminated by some excellent Dee forward play, Emma was inches away from tapping home but a goal line scramble saw Emma in the back of the net and the ball skittering just wide. One of those days!

With the game progressing in much the same vein, Cooke mounted a classic counterattack and with many of the Dee players caught high from their relentless onslaught, Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam was left unprotected and the home team took advantage.

It could have been two just before half time when Cooke attacked down their right. Amy Long read the danger brilliantly though and, coming from the opposite side, picked off the cross with a resounding clearance high and wide.

With a change to formation for the second half, Donaghadee began to find more joy on the wings, with Catherine Armstrong getting through a mountain of work on the right and Sarah Louise Baird bursting forward on the left.

Ali Stevenson also pushed much higher up the pitch and one of her forays into the attacking circle resulted in a hurried clearance from the Cooke keeper which fell straight to Helen Hooks at the top of the dee. Helen’s shot, heading for the bottom left corner, was kicked off the line by a defender, away for a penalty corner. One of those days.

When Cooke threatened to break again down the Dee left or through the middle, Paige Reilly and Claire Stewart were there to mop up the danger, leaving Siobhan with very little to do in the closing stages. Donaghadee were left to rue their missed chances and reflect on what might have been. Final score 1-0 to Cooke.

Thanks once again to Hannah Simpson for umpiring duties. The 1XI next play on Saturday, away to Parkview.

Junior 8: DLHC 2XI 4-0 NICS 4XI
Following a heavy defeat away at Newry last week, the 2nd XI were looking to bounce back with a home game this week against NICS 4th XI. Captain Janice McVeigh had the luxury of a 13 player squad, and every one of them played their part in an entertaining encounter at Bangor Grammar.

The Dee started as brightly as the sunshine they were playing in, with some lovely link-up play between midfield and a forward line being led in the early stages by Kerrie Turtle, Vicky O’Neill and Tasha Paxton. With only five minutes on the clock, one such move allowed Kerrie to take a shot on goal which was well saved by the keeper, but Sarah Harkness was on hand to bury the rebound from close range.

Donaghadee were determined not to waste the early lead, and continued to play attractive hockey with Emily Morris, Carmen Van Der Schyff and Rebecca Bolton covering miles in midfield seemingly effortlessly, breaking up NICS attacks and setting the Dee forwards away time and again.

The pressure resulted in a series of penalty corners but the second goal continued to elude the Dee, and NICS began to grow in confidence with some attacking play of their own which resulted in a penalty corner at the other end.

Brilliant defending by Natalie Jamieson, swiftly out as first runner, snuffed out the danger but it earned her a spell on sidelines with an injured hand as a result. She was replaced by Deborah Gilmour who slotted into defence and proceeded to impress with her solid tackling and calm ball distribution.

In spite of their dominant first half possession, Donaghadee turned around at halftime with a slim 1-0 lead, and the second half started far more evenly with both teams enjoying spells of attacking play until Rebecca set Emily away down the right hand side of the pitch – beating the first defender, Emily crossed into the circle and Vickie Pollock was there to meet it with a lovely finish.

The goal galvanised the Dee even further, pressing on in attack and earning another penalty corner a short time later. This time Kerrie calmly picked out Tasha to her right, and she scored with a sweeping flick beyond the keeper. Kerrie thought she had her own name on the score sheet shortly after, when she had the ball in the net after another good Dee move, but the whistle had already gone for an infringement outside the circle.

To their credit, NICS never let their heads go down and continued to grow into the game with some good attacking play leading to an increasing number of attempts on goal. However Janice was playing a captain’s role in goals, making a number of great saves as the game wore on, helped by Lisa Higgins and Georgia Ferguson in defence.

Following one such period of NICS pressure in the circle, Georgia showed why she is such a valued part of the team as she dispossessed an opposition player, drove determinedly out of the circle and set Emily away in midfield. A sweeping pass out to Tasha wide on the right cut out the NICS midfield and Tasha’s pinpoint cross to the back post was beautifully finished by Kerrie on her reverse side; a great end-to-end move by the Dee capping an excellent performance.

The final score was 4-0 to Donaghadee, a great result to build on for the season. Many thanks to Nicola Patton for umpiring and thanks to the Frisky Bear in Holywood for sponsoring the match ball. Next up for the Second is an away trip to play Saintfield 3XI on Saturday.

23 September 2017: Donaghadee LHC 1XI 1-1 Annadale and Newry 7-1 Donaghadee LHC 2XI

Senior 3: DLHC 1XI 1-1 Annadale
Donaghadee Ladies’ 1XI welcomed Belfast side Annadale to Bangor Grammar on Saturday knowing they’d be in for a tough match; not only have previous years seen tight results between the two sides, but Annadale got off to a flying start last week with a 5-1 victory over South Antrim. The Dee won a hard fought point against Bangor however and with a strong team available for Captain Paige Reilly again this week, all the signs pointed to another close encounter.

Donaghadee won the toss and chose to play with the blustery wind at their backs in the first half. The initial exchanges were dominated by the midfields as both tried to exert early authority on the game; Donaghadee welcomed back the dynamic Helen Hooks to complement the silky skills of Kerry Kennedy in the middle of the pitch, with Catherine Armstrong providing the outlet wide on the right.

The Dee defence was tested midway through the first half, when an Annadale forward burst free to find herself one on one with Donaghadee keeper Siobhan McAdam. The Ulster Masters’ netminder was well up to the task though, standing tall to make a super save to keep the score at 0-0. The home defence were unlucky moments later when a cross came in from the Dee’s left and an Annadale attacker bustled through to apply the finishing touch at the far post. Despite Donaghadee feeling slightly aggrieved that there had been an obstruction to prevent the defence getting to the ball, the goal stood and the Dee went into the half time break 1-0 down.

There was a huge amount of grit on show from the red and green defence as the second half got underway; at one point Amy Long, Claire Stewart and Siobhan were all lying prostrate in the circle having all thrown themselves bodily at a wave of Annadale attacks. The determination paid off however, with the ball being cleared to safety without the goal lined having been broached.

It was the last action for Amy who, unable to continue after her heroics, was replaced by Emma McGimpsey and Donaghadee started to find a foothold in the game. Ali Stevenson and Sarah-Louise Baird became the link between defence and attack and the red and green began to work the ball better in the final third of the pitch.

With Carolyn Scott running across the Annadale keeper, Kerry K had enough room to squeeze a shot low to the keeper’s right, pinging it off the inside of the post and along the line. The chance seemed lost, but Leanna Young timed her run to the back post to perfection and from a tight angle, fired the rebound high into the roof of the net for a stunning first Dee goal for the newcomer.

Both sides had chances to take the three points before the final whistle but on reflection, a draw was probably the fairest result as there continues to be little to separate the two teams. Thanks go to Hannah Simpson for umpiring and to Red Leaf Kitchens and Interiors for sponsoring the 1XI’s match ball. Next up for the Firsts is a trip to Shaw’s Bridge on Saturday to play Cooke, pass back 1pm.

Junior 8: Newry 7-1 DLHC 2XI
With an early fixture rearrangement last week, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 2XI got their league campaign underway on Saturday with a trip down the A1 to Newry. Newry were relegated from the Firsts’ league, Senior 3, last year, so this was going to be a big challenge for Captain Janice McVeigh and her team.

There was plenty of experience in the Dee ranks though, with Kerrie Turtle, Emily Morris, Tasha Paxton and Sarah Harkness all having faced Newry in Senior 3 over the last couple of years. The marker was quickly laid down, with these Dee stalwarts all involved in Donaghadee’s first attacking move.

Emily wasted no time in spraying a quick pass to Tasha who in turn found Sarah in the attacking circle. With Newry’s defence not yet up to speed, she was able to pick a pass to an expectant Kerrie. With a calm finish and no more than a minute gone on the clock, Donaghadee found themselves 1-0 up to make it a dream start.

Newry’s strength soon began to tell though, with keeper Janice called into action on a number of occasions to keep the home side at bay. The pressure was relentless however and one shot fell to a Newry attacker who was able to bring her side level. Just before half time, they added a second but Donaghadee heads were still high.

With the half time team talk out of the way, Donaghadee felt they were still in with a chance of taking something from the game, and there was great determination shown by Deborah Gilmore, Natalie Jamison and Nikki Robinson clearing the ball  away from danger. At the other end, Rebecca Bolton, Vicky O’Neill and Caroline Davison worked tirelessly to try and create an opening but the Newry fire-power was just too strong.

The final score was 7-1 but the young Dee side were praised roundly for their play and never-say-die attitude – something which will stand them in good stead as the season progresses. The Seconds are at home to NICS 4XI this Saturday, passback 1pm.

16 September 2017: Bangor 0-0 Donaghadee LHC 1XI

Senior League 3: Bangor 1XI 0-0 Donaghadee 1XI
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI got their 2017/18 league campaign underway on Saturday against neighbours Bangor.

There was little to choose between these sides last year, with a narrow 2-1 Dee win and a 1-1 draw, and much of the season spent in close contention in the league table, so there was much anticipation for this game.

Donaghadee have added to their ranks since their last competitive fixture with two players, Emma McGimpsey and Leanna Young making their red and green debuts, Sarah Harkness-Robinson returning after a year out and Catherine Armstrong joining her sister Kerry Kennedy in midfield.

The numerous Dee supporters were treated to some lovely hockey in the opening exchanges, with Donaghadee using the midfield of Kerry, Catherine and Emma to work the ball forward at every opportunity.

There were early penalty corners for Donaghadee with Carolyn Scott shooting just wide and Leanna mere inches away from connecting at the back post. Donaghadee also saw a number of shots agonisingly just off target and this, combined with stout defending from the Bangor rearguard, kept the game scoreless going in to half time.

Bangor upped their intensity after the break and it was Donaghadee’s turn to show some resolute defending; Claire Stewart was calmness personified in the centre, and Amy Long did well to curtail the attacking threat of Bangor’s speedy left wing – working with midfielder Ali Stevenson to put in a number of timely interventions to ensure the ball was cleared to safety. On the left, Sarah-Louise Baird patrolled that touch-line and made a number of quick bursts to turn defence into attack to try and catch the home team on the break.

Donaghadee were able to show their growing strength in depth with the introduction of Lisa Higgins and Emily Morris; both added fresh legs in midfield as the game became stretched. Two good chances fell to Donaghadee late in the second half with Catherine and Sarah both unlucky not to take more from their forays into the Bangor circle, while Donaghadee keeper Siobhan McAdam – who had little to do in the first half – was called into action to keep the sheet clean as the game drew to a close. Final score 0-0.

Donaghadee Captain, Paige Reilly thanked Hannah Simpson for umpiring and declared herself happy with the performance. “I was delighted with how the girls played today. We are pleased to have kept a clean sheet and to have come away with a valuable point and we’re very much looking forward to next week’s game against Annadale.” Pass back against Annadale is at 1pm on Saturday at BGS.

With Ulster Hockey rearranging a number of fixtures in Junior 8, DLHC 2XI had an unexpected free weekend, with their planned match against CI 5XI to be played later in the season. They will be looking forward to getting started when they face Newry away on Saturday.

10 September 2017: Season Preview

The 2017/18 season gets underway for both Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club teams this Saturday with an away fixture to neighbours Bangor for the 1XI and an opening home game for the 2XI against Malone.

DLHC 1XI maintain their Senior 3 status from last year thanks to a mid-table finish, with new faces from Castle Derg and Cooke joining this league in what will no doubt prove to be as close as it was last season. Donaghadee will be hoping for a strong start in the derby to gain early momentum in the table.

The 2XI begin life in Junior 8 with an opening fixture against Malone and with a strong showing by the team’s youngsters against Bangor last week in an entertaining pre-season friendly, captain Janice McVeigh is looking forward to guiding her team forward this year. Pass back is 1pm at Bangor Grammar School and the club is delighted to welcome Ards Fireplaces as the first home match ball sponsor this season.

26 August 2017: Reds v Whites Report

Reds v Whites

Reds v Whites, 26th August 2017

Last Saturday saw the start of matches for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club, with the now traditional intra-club Reds v Whites match taking place on the Dee’s home turf at Bangor Grammar.

With club members joined by several new faces, friends and sisters, there was a full complement of numbers for the afternoon’s run out in what turned out to be an entertaining and competitive match. It was won 3-2 in the end by the Whites, despite a couple of last minute chances for the Reds to even things up before the final whistle.

There was some excellent hockey on show in energy-sapping humid weather; tough conditions which will stand the girls in good stead as the season approaches. With friendlies against Saintfield at home this week (Saturday 2nd September) and Bangor away next (Friday 8th), along with the Grosvenor tournament on Sunday 10th September, there’s plenty of hockey lined up for the red and green.

The league proper starts on Saturday 16th September with both teams in action: the 1XI make the short hop to play Bangor away, while the 2XI are at home to Malone – and, with a number of new players joining the Dee ranks as the season draws closer, it promises to be another exciting year for the club. New players are always welcome: email dlhc@hotmail.co.uk or visit DonaghadeeLHC.co.uk, Facebook.com/DonaghadeeLHC or Twitter.com/DonaghadeeLHC for more info.
