Senior 3: Donaghadee LHC 1XI 1-0 Bangor
The final match of 2017 for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI saw local rivals Bangor make the short trip to Donaghadee’s home at Bangor Grammar.

The match saw the return of the first game of the season which ended a 0-0 draw between these sides meaning everything was to play for in this much anticipated game.

The loyal Dee supporters were treated to some lovely hockey in the opening exchanges, with Donaghadee using the midfield of Kerry Kennedy, Catherine Armstrong and Helen Hooks to work the ball forward at every opportunity.

Bangor were well drilled in their set plays from the back and quick on the counterattack putting pressure on the red and green defence. However, captain Paige Reilly managed to keep control and quick play through Lisa Higgins to Leanna Young who won a penalty corner. Carolyn Scott hit a first time shot to take the half time lead: 1-0 to Donaghadee.

The Dee knew Bangor would be strong in the second half and they did well to keep a tight press directed by midfielder Ali Stevenson.

The home side put plenty of pressure on down both flanks, firing a number of shots agonisingly just off target; unfortunately Emma McGimpsey’s run to the back post was just short to convert.

Bangor kept their intensity and it was Donaghadee’s turn to show some hardcore defending; Claire Stewart was solid in the centre, and Amy Long did well to force the ball wide to allow the red and green to regroup. Donaghadee were then able to show their growing strength as a team through quick, sharp passsing.

The crowd enjoyed a nail-biting five minutes just before the end when Leanna broke down the Bangor defence only for her shot to rebound off the post. Despite big numbers in the circle, Donaghadee just couldn’t add to the tally to secure the game.

Donaghadee keeper Siobhan McAdam – who had little to do in the first half – was called into late action to keep the sheet clean as the game drew to a close, leaving the final score 1 – 0 to Donaghadee and another three points which consolidates their top three position in the league as 2017 draws to a close.

Donaghadee Captain Paige Reilly thanked Mike Smyth for umpiring and stated what a satisfying way it was to finish the year. Vice Kerry Kennedy also praised the team for a “truly gritty performance from every single player”.

Thanks to Groomsport Playgroup for sponsoring the match ball and of course the growing band of Dee supporters for coming down every week even in the freezing cold.

The 1XI are back in action on 6th January at Lagan College to face league leaders Annadale.

A very Merry Christmas & Best Wishes for 2018 from all at DLHC.

Senior League 3: DLHC 1XI 2-1 PSNI
Donaghadee Ladies’ 1XI were at home to PSNI last Saturday with a great opportunity to put more distance between themselves and fourth placed South Antrim at the halfway point in Senior 3.

In what turned out to be a fairly evenly contested match, Donaghadee were the first to score when Carolyn Scott hit a deflected shot at a penalty corner in the opening stages, after some great work down the right by Amy Long linking with right wing Catherine Armstrong, who drew the foul from the hapless defender in the circle.

Donaghadee were then caught on a quick counter attack with a sweeping move finished off at Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam’s back post to make the score 1-1.

With Kerry Kennedy and Helen Hooks providing the forward impetus for Donaghadee in the midfield channels, one quick ball found found Leanna Young wide left in the circle and the forward flashed a shot high across the face of the goal, with Carolyn only inches from connecting to divert it into the back of the net.

The Donaghadee defence then more than earned their Christmas Do drinks with numerous well-timed challenges and interceptions to keep the score level. With Claire Stewart bossing things in the centre, Paige Reilly and Amy were stopping the threats from the wide areas. Lisa Higgins played her part too, providing excellent cover just in front of the defenders – tucking in when necessary, and pushing up to help the midfielders in attack too.

With the match in its closing stages and it looking distinctly like Donaghadee were heading for their second draw in a row, Natalie Jamieson came on up front and she was lurking in the circle with Emma McGimpsey when Leanna carved one final opportunity, this time from the right hand side of the circle. Emma found herself totally unmarked at the back post and she met Leanna’s pinpoint cross in emphatic fashion to make the score 2-1 to Donaghadee, much to the joy of the Dee sideline support.

Thanks to Hannah Simpson for umpiring and to Mr Photobooth NI for sponsoring the winning match ball. The 1XI now have a week off before they welcome Bangor to BGS on Saturday 16th December in their final game of 2017.

Minor Cup Round 2: Donaghadee LHC 2XI 0-4 Coleraine 3XI
After a win in the first round of the cup, Donaghadee LHC Seconds were determined to put up a good fight against a strong Coleraine team in the second round, played at Bangor Grammar on Saturday.

Donaghadee started off strongly, despite missing Emily Morris and Tasha Paxton, trying their best to work through a tough, well-marshalled visiting defence. Midfielders Katie Donnelly and Vicky O’Neill worked hard to get the ball through to forwards Kerrie Turtle and Sarah Harkness but they were unable to find a breakthrough.

The possession then switched and Coleraine were quick to turn defence into attack. Defenders Nicky McMillen, Georgia Ferguson and Nina Wells were working well at clearing the ball from the circle but Coleraine slotted one in behind keeper, Janice McVeigh.

It wasn’t long before Donaghadee were on the attack again. Natalie Jamieson went on her trademark run up the pitch reaching the top of the opposition circle and winning a free. Taken quickly, Natalie was able to get a shot in but the goal was denied by the Coleraine defenders. At half time the score was 2-0 but the Donaghadee girls were not ready to give up.

After a slight shuffling of positions for Donaghadee at half time, the game started again with Coleraine immediately on the attack. Carmen Van der Schyff and Deborah Gilmour were able to break down the attack however and they did well to send the ball back up the pitch.

Despite plenty of effort all over the pitch, Donaghadee were not able to get the ball past the Coleraine keeper, while strong attacking play at the other end allowed the visitors to add another two goals, with the final score 4-0 to Coleraine. Thanks to Kerry Kennedy and Hannah Simpson for umpiring. The 2XI are back to league action next week when they play NICS 4XI away.

Junior League 8A: DLHC 2XI 1-1 NICS 5XI
On a bitterly cold Saturday, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 2XI welcomed Civil Service 5ths to Bangor Grammar.  The team has been on a good run of late, including a recent cup win over Civil Service  4ths.

The Dee started the match off brightly, with Emily Morris, Vicky O’Neill, Katie Donnelly and Carmen Van Der Schyff linking well together in midfield to get an early foothold in the game.

Sarah Harkness had an opportunity to get an early goal, picking the ball up at the attacking 25 and driving into the circle, but was unlucky to see her effort go just wide of the post.

As the first half continued Donaghadee grew in confidence, with Tasha Paxton and Kerrie Turtle pushing forward in attack, threatening the Civil Service goal. The team looked threatening all over the pitch, sustaining good pressure and remaining in the Civil Service half through quick pressing of the ball and good link-up play right from defence to attack.

From a Donaghadee penalty corner, Kerrie was able to pass the ball quickly to Sarah, who swept the ball into the Civil Service net. Unfortunately, the ball didn’t hit the back board and was disallowed. However, the team finished the first half full of confidence with Civil Service having failed to really test Janice McVeigh in the Dee goal.

The team started the second half as they finished the first, and it wasn’t too long before the Dee’s patience paid off. The attack once again working well together, Tasha found Emily in the circle with a great through ball, with Emily calmly slotting the ball past the keeper to put the Dee one up.

As the second half wore on, the Dee defence of Nicky O’Neill, Deborah Gilmore, Georgia Ferguson and Natalie Jamieson found themselves increasingly in action to repel the Civil Service attacks.

Unfortunately the girls were unable to ward off a prolonged period of pressure, and the Civil Service drew level. Undeterred, the team continued to fight back to try to score a late winner.

Nicky was able to pick out the midfield and attack thanks to her defence-splitting passes, while Deborah, Georgia and Natalie pushed forward from the back. Indeed Donaghadee won a late penalty corner and Katie was unfortunate to see her shot slip just wide of the post.

The game finished 1-1.  Thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring.  The 2XI’s next game will be in the second round of the Minor Cup at home to Coleraine 3rds, pass back 2.30pm on Saturday, and captain Janice McVeigh can certainly take heart from this match and in the team’s recent run of form.

The 1XI continue their league action at home to PSNI on Saturday, pass back 1pm.

Senior League 3: DLHC 1XI 1-1 Ballynahinch
Hot on the heels of two superb victories in as many weeks, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI were aiming to make that three in a row as the first half of the league programme draws to a close. Ballynahinch were the visitors to Bangor Grammar this time round and coach Brian McKee had a full squad at his disposal with the Seconds having no match.

It was an evenly contested opening period, with both teams trying to find some sort of rhythm although Donaghadee probably shaded the attacking chances. As has been the case in the last three games, the Dee were first to score; Paige Reilly playing Captain Fantastic got the last touch at a penalty corner to give Donaghadee a 1-0 lead.

The lead didn’t last long, however with Ballynahinch taking their chance at the other end to quickly level things up again. Just before half time, Donaghadee had the ball in the back of the net again but the away umpire adjudged a foul to have taken place in a previous phase of play and the goal was ruled out.

Donagahdee were unable to capitalise further, despite several great chances in the second half, but the point gained from this match is enough to ensure that they remain third in the league table. Thanks to Hannah Simpson for umpiring and to Stanley Woods and Co Accountants for sponsoring the match ball. The Firsts now have a week off before they play PSNI at home on Saturday 2nd December.

Fresh from a week’s break, DLHC 2XI play NICS at home on Saturday, pass back 1pm.

11 Nov 2017: Instonians 3-4 Donaghadee LHC 1XI and Donaghadee LHC 2XI 4-1 Derg Valley

DLHC's 1XI's three goalscorers against Instonians: Leanna Young, Carolyn Scott and Ali Stevenson

DLHC’s 1XI’s three goalscorers against Instonians: Leanna Young, Carolyn Scott (2) and Ali Stevenson

Senior 3: Instonians 3-4 Donaghadee LHC 1XI
Looking to back up the previous week’s splendid victory over table topping Kilkeel, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI travelled to Shaw’s Bridge last Friday night for their away fixture to Instonians.

The Dee girls have traditionally found this Friday night fixture a tricky one and it’s always a closely contested game with Instonians so this had the potential to be a difficult one for Donaghadee.

In much the same vein as the previous week, Donaghadee started brightly with plenty of attacking intent; there was lots of action in the attacking circle with both Leanna Young and Kerry Kennedy flashing high shots just across the face of the Instonians’ goal with no final deflections to take them over the line.

It wasn’t long before Leanna connected with one to add to her growing goal tally for her new club however – her strike from wide left beating the keeper at the near post to give Donaghadee the lead.

Paige Reilly then came close at an attacking penalty corner when she narrowly missed popping the ball in from a tight angle: she was mere inches from turning the ball round the post.

Instonians were straight back on the attack and Amy Long was on her mettle to intercept several threatening runs as Instonians attacked down their left. Keeper Siobhan McAdam then did her bit to retain the Dee’s lead, bravely saving a shot straight at her midriff.

Instonians’ pressure told however and they bundled the ball over the Donaghadee line to equalise midway through the first half. Undeterred, Donaghadee kept pushing forwards and Carolyn Scott was next to score when her bullet of a strike evaded both keeper and the player on the line at a well worked penalty corner. 2-1 to the Dee going in to half time.

With defender Claire Stewart leaving the action at half time for another engagement, a defensive reshuffle was required and Donaghadee’s lead was shortlived with Instonians taking advantage of the Dee’s failure to clear the ball to bring the score back level at 2-2.

There was a collective gritting of Donaghadee teeth – no more so than when Lisa Higgins in midfield took a deflected ball to the jaw – and the Dee got back to it. Another attacking penalty corner resulted in another goal: this time Ali Stevenson picked up a rebound and calmly picked her spot. 3-2 to Donaghadee.

And then, just to keep the travelling Dee support on the edge of their seats, the home side scored again, unsurprisingly much to their delight. 3-3. (Are you still keeping up?)

All match Donaghadee had been using the flanks to their advantage with Emma McGimpsey and Laura Jackson – with pace to burn – driving into the attacking circle from the right at every opportunity and Helen Hooks probing on the left.

With the umpires having signalled two minutes remaining, there was one last foray down the left for the Dee when young Natalie Jamieson made terrific progress as she outpaced several Inst midfielders before being unceremoniously upended by a defender just on the 25.

Leanna had the presence of mind to take the free quickly and with the Inst defenders all out of position, she found Carolyn unmarked in the circle. Rounding the keeper, Carolyn added her second and Donaghadee’s fourth in almost the last action of the game to give the Dee a very hard fought for three points. Final score 4-3 to Donaghadee. Thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring.

The Firsts are at home to Ballynahinch on Saturday, pass back 1pm.

Junior League 8A: Donaghadee LHC 2XI 4-1 Derg Valley
The 2XI welcomed Derg Vally to Bangor Grammar last Saturday, with the home team hoping to make it back to back wins for the first time this season after their cup success last week. Whether it was the long drive or the fast tempo of the Dee’s opening forays, the opposition were slow to get started and found themselves 1-0 down very early on.

A lovely combination move from Katie Donnelly and Emily Morris on the right of midfield took the ball high up the pitch, and forward Laura Jackson did the rest, beating two defenders with ease and getting her shot past the keeper.

The early goal gave Donaghadee great spirit and belief, and it showed through their attacking flair and assured passing. The lead was doubled shortly afterwards – Lisa Higgins with a quickly taken sideline ball drove towards the circle and found Emily at the top edge. Her pinpoint shot made its way through a crowd of players and into the back of the net.

The Dee continued to dominate possession and territory, with Derg Valley rarely threatening the home goal. In spite of being spectators for most of the half, the Dee defensive unit of Georgia Ferguson, Nicky McMillen and Natalie Jamieson performed brilliantly when called upon, snuffing out any attacks with ease and carrying the ball back into attack.

Just before half time, one such move saw the ball driven out of defence and picked up by Carmen Van Der Schyff, on the left of midfield. Carrying the ball strongly down the left wing, Carmen put in one of her trademark reverse stick crosses to Vicky O’Neill, fresh off the subs’ bench, who took a shot at goal.

The defence held firm for the initial shot, but there were plenty of Dee players in the circle for the rebound, and after a little hockey pinball, the ball eventually fell to Kerrie Turtle who made no mistake with her strike. 3-0 to Donaghadee at half time.

There must have been some stern words in the Derg Valley dugout at the break, and they came out fighting for the second half. On the attack from the whistle, they earned a penalty corner from their first real visit to the Dee’s circle and executed it beautifully with an unstoppable shot past keeper Janice McVeigh who, up to that point had not had a shot to save.

It set the tone for the next 10 minutes, with the play far more evenly balanced. As Derg Valley pushed on again, the Dee defence was beaten for the first time and Janice was called on to make a great save to prevent them reducing the deficit still further, which she did with her usual aplomb – it turned out to be the only touch of the ball she had all match!

Galvanised by the save, Donaghadee returned to their free-flowing hockey of the first half for the rest of the match. Sarah Harkness was proving pivotal in her advanced midfield role, with pin-point ball distribution in attack and making herself available in the circle for numerous shots on goal.

Unfortunately by this time, the Derg keeper had well and truly got her eye in, and nothing was getting past her it seemed – she saved every shot from Sarah that came her way, and Kerrie too was desperately unlucky not to tuck a few more away at the back post.

Sarah thought she finally had her goal when she picked up the ball from Lisa following a long corner, but her clean strike from the top of the circle was just touched in by Laura for her second of the afternoon. Laura was then unlucky not to get her hat-trick, as her strong running and silky skills created a few more chances before the final whistle, but it was not to be.

Final score was 4-1 to Donaghadee, and a very pleasing performance all round. Thanks to Nicola Patton and Mike Smyth for umpiring, to all the spectators who gave their support and to Coast Holywood for sponsoring this week’s match ball. Next up for the 2XI is a trip to CI 5XI.

Senior 3: Donaghadee LHC 1XI 3-0 Kilkeel
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI recorded a resounding victory over league leaders Kilkeel on Saturday.

Kilkeel travelled to BGS having not only won all five of their matches so far this season but also having scored an impressive 13 unanswered goals, so this was going to be a stern test for the girls in red and green.

Donaghadee showed their attacking intent right from the off when Carolyn Scott rode a couple of challenges to carry the ball into the Kilkeel circle; the scrambling last defender just able to make the block to prevent the shot on target.

The front-foot attacking continued from Donaghadee, and they reaped the reward when Helen Hooks set up Leanna Young for a cracking finish to get the Dee up and running on the score sheet.

It was to get even better for the home side just before half time when they doubled their lead. Kerry Kennedy, imperious as always in midfield, spotted a great run from Emma McGimpsey coming in off her wing. The perfectly weighted pass met Emma at the back post, with Emma hammering the ball past the Kilkeel keeper to give Donaghadee a 2-0 lead going in to half time.

Kilkeel certainly weren’t going to give up easily and Donaghadee found themselves with a lot more defending to do in the second half. Amy Long took one for the team when she threw herself at the first time shot from a penalty corner – stopping the ball with her knee resulted in a couple of minutes to gather herself on the sideline.

With no subs, she was bravely back into the fray as Kilkeel continued to press forward. Captain Paige Reilly was the next to hit the deck as she and keeper Siobhan McAdam went sprawling to prevent yet another shot hitting the target.

Siobhan then made a brilliant, unsighted save from almost point blank range, turning the ball just round her right hand post as the shot came in through a melee of players.

Ali Stevenson was needed to tuck in to a deep midfield role to break up the attacks down the middle and, as so often this season, was in the right place at the right time to pick off the threats just outside the defensive circle.

Claire Stewart was another who was a pillar of strength in defence – she was calmness personified in the Donaghadee circle with numerous well read interceptions as Kilkeel pressed high up the pitch.

It was real backs to the wall stuff from Donaghadee with seemingly all clearances falling to a Kilkeel stick. Gradually though, the Dee started to regain their composure of the first half and the out balls started to find a red stick again.

Catherine Armstrong proved yet again to be a terrific outlet on the right with several lung bursting runs into the attacking 25 where she was able to win a number of frees to relieve some of the pressure.

With one last attack on the cards, Donaghadee piled forwards with Leanna carrying into the Kilkeel circle and, with the final touch of the game, got away a shot which escaped the Kilkeel keeper to give Donaghadee a richly deserved 3-0 victory.

Thanks to Hannah Simpson for umpiring. The 1XI are next in action on Friday evening away to Instonians, pass back 7pm at Shaw’s Bridge.

Minor Cup Round 1: NICS 1-3 Donaghadee LHC 2XI
Donaghadee Ladies’ 2XI were on their travels to Stormont this week to take on Civil Service in the first round of the Minor Cup. Having enjoyed a free Saturday the previous week, the team was eager to get back on the pitch.

Civil Service had the luxury of a number of subs, so it wasn’t going to be an easy task for Donaghadee, with fresh legs rolling on and off for the home side but Donaghadee, with passback, nonetheless set a high tempo in the early stages of the game. Up front, Sarah Harkness broke free and combined well with Emily Morris to make the first attack.

The Civil defence was on hand to clear however and, with a quick counterattack from the home side, young Dee defender Natalie Jamieson was able to make her mark not only by clearing the ball from danger, but also turning defence to attack with a trademark sprint forwards. Kerrie Turtle was on hand to ensure the attack resulted in a shot, but the Civil Service keeper thwarted the attempt and the game remained scoreless.

Back came Service with another attack, this time down the left but it was adeptly dealt with by Nicola Patton – who showed her versatility by switching her goalkeeping pads for an outfield position for this match.

The next attack for Donaghadee came from Carmen van der Schyff, showing her usual boundless energy. She burst forwards from midfield and linked with Sarah who once again forced a good save from the home keeper, with the first half finishing goalless.

Civil Service were the first to attack in the second half, when a forward found herself one on one with Deborah Gilmour. Debs wasn’t to be beaten though and she confidently took the ball away from the Donaghadee circle and found the stick of Emily lurking on the right. With swift progress up the wing, it was the turn of Tasha Paxton to take a shot; once again cleared by the Service keeper.

Donaghadee continued in this attacking vein and earned themselves a number of penalty corners but stout defending from the home side kept the score at 0-0. With mere minutes left on the clock, in swept Katie Donnelly to continue the Donaghadee attack – how brilliant to see her back in a red and green shirt after a maternity break. Just like old times, she found Kerrie as the two experienced players linked in search of a last gasp winner. It wasn’t to be though, and the final whistle went with neither team finding the back of the net.

With no extra time being played it went straight to shuttles to find the winner. Kerrie was up first for the Dee and effortlessly found the back of the net within the allotted 8 seconds. With Civil equalising, Natalie was next with a great shuttle which was agonisingly just over the 8 seconds so was not allowed.

Janice McVeigh then played her captain’s role to a tee in the Dee goal, saving the next Service shuttle to give Donaghadee the advantage, which Emily consolidated by scoring the next Dee run. With Service missing their next attempt, Tasha stepped up and showed no nerves to slide the ball safely into the back of the net to ensure a thrilling victory and Donaghadee’s progress to the second round. Thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring. The 2XI are back in league action at home to Derg Valley on Saturday, pass back 1pm.

28 October 2017: South Antrim 3-3 Donaghadee LHC 1XI

Fun at the Halloween Party, 28 October 2017

Fun at the Halloween Party, 28 October 2017

Senior 3: South Antrim 1XI 3-3 DLHC 1XI
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI were away to Lisburn on Saturday to face South Antrim, a team sitting just one point above the Dee in Senior 3 before this match got underway.

Donaghadee got off to a flying start when Kerry Kennedy gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with under 10 minutes on the clock; a typically flamboyant reverse stick shot had the South Antrim defence totally wrong-footed as the ball crossed the line in off the far post.

South rallied though and the remainder of the first half was very evenly contested and defensively Siobhan McAdam made a number of fantastic saves, with Amy Long and Paige Reilly in the heart of defence reading the attacks well to keep the home side out.

It was great to see Lisa Higgins and Natalie Jamison starting in the wide defensive roles on Saturday and both played their part in nullifying any threats from the South Antrim wings, with Ali Stevenson breaking up the attacks in the centre.

With the second half just underway, Donaghadee suffered a horrible 10 minutes in which they managed to concede 3 goals in quick succession; with less than 5 minutes between each, there was a sinking feeling that the home side were going to bag the three points but what followed was a remarkable display of grit from the girls in red and green.

Helen Hooks, tenacious as always, won the ball back on the left of midfield and burst forward towards the attacking circle. With the defenders drawn to the ball, Helen’s perfectly timed and weighted cross found forward Carolyn Scott free in the circle and she was able to fire off a first time shot to beat the scrambling keeper to bring Donaghadee back to within one goal.

Less than five minutes later, Donaghadee won a penalty corner. At the top of the circle, Leanna Young had time to pick her pass with Paige applying the deflection to beat the last defender to bring the score level at 3-3.

The action was end to end in the closing minutes of the game, with Emma McGimpsey and Emily Morris both doing their best to add to Donaghadee’s final tally, but the final score remained 3-3, with Donaghadee delighted to have earned a point from this match. Thanks to Brian McKee for umpiring.

The 1XI play league leaders Kilkeel at home on Saturday, pass back 1pm and the 2XI are in Minor Cup action away to Civil Service, pass back also 1pm.

Intermediate Cup Round 1: Donaghadee LHC 1XI 0-2 Dungannon
On Saturday 14th October, Donaghadee LHC 1XI hosted Junior 3 side Dungannon 2XI in the first round of the 2017/18 Intermediate Cup.

Following recording their first 3 points of the season the previous Saturday, the Dee started confidently, positioning the visitors quickly on the back foot. Neat play down the left hand side between Sarah Louise Baird and Helen Hooks resulted in a crashed first time ball across the face of goal from Leanna Young, which an incoming Emma McGimpsey missed by just a whisker.

A resolute Dungannon defence repeatedly denied any attempt on goal by. Midway through the first half the Junior 3 side broke at lightening pace down the right wing, slipping the ball back inside for a simple finish.

Undeterred by going a goal down, the first half ended much the same as the beginning of the match with Donaghadee applying sustained pressure on the visitors. Superb passing play from Ali Stevenson in the heart of midfield helped build wave upon wave of Donaghadee attack.

Following the half time break, the hosts continued to press for an early goal. However Dungannon still posed a serious threat on the counter. The back three of Paige Reilly, Claire Stewart and Amy Long were strong in the tackle and maintained composure in their defending circle and goalkeeper Nicola Patton marshalled her defence and was a commanding presence between the posts.

Donaghadee nearly equalised when Laura Jackson found herself with time in the circle, forcing a diving save to the keeper’s right. Moments later Emily Morris got a shot away which went agonisingly inches wide of the goal. In the last five minutes of the game Dungannon solidified their place in the next round with a well executed penalty corner. Unfortunately it was just ‘one of those days’ for the Dee and the girls wish Dungannon all the best in the next round of the competition. Thanks to Brian McKee for umpiring.

The 1XI now have a week’s break before resuming league action away to South Antrim on Saturday 28th October.

Junior 8: Ards 5XI 2-0 Donaghadee LHC 2XI
DLHC 2XI made the short hop to Londonderry Park to play Ards 5s on Saturday. With the team progressing each week and growing stronger and more coherent, it was all to play for in this local derby. From the first whistle Donaghadee intercepted quickly to gain possession and, with some great passing Sarah Harkness linked up well with Rebecca Bolton wide on the right.

Rebecca continued her run and was able to find Tasha Paxton, playing the ball through several Ards players to tee up Tasha with a first time shot which narrowly passed the post. Ards were quick to turn it around with a speedy break but a superb interception by Lisa Higgins sent the ball back up the pitch with Vickie O’Neill having time to take a shot.

With both teams eager for a breakthrough, Ards began to apply more pressure but they found Natalie Jamieson in great form to intercept and prevent the ball getting into the danger area. At the other end, Carmen van der Schyff linked with Kerrie Turtle, with Kerrie so unlucky to see her shot rebound off the post.

As the game see-sawed from end to end, Ards attacked again but Deborah Gilmore and Georgia Ferguson both made great clearances to ensure the score was goalless going into the second half. The home pressure continued however with Donaghadee keeper Janice McVeigh on hand with several saves to keep it scoreless.

Into the last 15 min and Ards kept pressing. It paid off as they broke the deadlock to get their first goal, a lead they doubled thank to a late, well-struck penalty corner by former Dee player Maura Hennessey (great to see Maura scoring goals, we’re just sorry it was against us!)

While it may not have been the ideal result, there are definitely signs that the team is beginning to settle as a unit which will stand them in good stead as the season progesses. Thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring. The 2XI play Newcastle away on Saturday, pass back 2.30pm.

DLHC’s Kerry Kennedy in action against Parkview, 7 October 2017

Senior League 3: Parkview 0-2 Donaghadee LHC
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI record first victory of the season with comprehensive display at Parkview.

With two draws and the previous week’s 1-0 defeat to Cooke on the board, Donaghadee finally got the outcome that matched the performance when they travelled to Ballyclare on Saturday.

As with the previous week, the Dee pressed high up the pitch: Parkview’s defence was under immediate pressure with the team working as a unit to prevent any outlet for the home side.

In the middle of the pitch Kerry Kennedy sought to spread the ball wide right to sister Catherine Armstrong at every opportunity with Helen Hooks adding pressure on the left.

Thanks to some super link up play by midfield, the ball broke to Carolyn Scott just on the attacking 25. With a deft reverse stick dink past the defender, she found Emma McGimpsey who, having timed her run to perfection, cut in to the circle to guide the ball through the onrushing keeper’s legs and firmly into the back of the net to give Donaghadee a deserved lead.

The Donaghadee onslaught continued; Amy Long was able to push up from her defensive berth on the right to support play and she was able to provide a couple of dangerous balls forward. Despite pressure coming from all over the pitch, the Parkview defence was able to hold on to keep the scoreline to 1-0 going in to half time.

If the forwards earned their half time Haribo thanks to the first half, the Donaghadee defence definitely deserved theirs when they were called into action thanks to a sudden break away by the home forwards just after the turn around.

Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam made a stunning diving save with the tip of her stick and Claire Stewart, calmness personified, ran the ball out of the circle to safety.

Back down the other end another Donaghadee attack caused havoc in the Parkview circle. With defender Paige Reilly still present after an attacking penalty corner, she combined with Sarah Louise Baird who launched a shot that deflected squarely on to the crossbar.

The home defence scrambled gamely to reset themselves as the ball was making its way back down but on hand was Leanna Young who took care to round the diving keeper. 2-0 to Donaghadee.

Donaghadee continued to press, with Ali Stevenson providing a couple of great crosses which were only narrowly missed as Donaghadee sought another. Two it was to be however, with coach Brian McKee satisfied with the result. Thanks once again to Hannah Simpson for umpiring duties.

Next match for the Firsts is at home to Dungannon 2XI on Saturday in the first round of the Intermediate Cup, pass back 1pm.

Junior 8: Saintfield 3XI 4-0 Donaghadee LHC 2XI
The 2nd XI were back in action away to Saintfield 3rds this week after a great home win last time out.  However a combination of a gravel pitch, lack of subs, a number of injuries and a strong opposition meant the Dee weren’t celebrating at the final whistle this week.

The trepidation of playing on a very unfamiliar surface seemed to affect the team from the off, and they were quickly under pressure from the home team who didn’t give the Dee girls any time to settle. Some nice interplay from the Saintfield forwards drove the ball into the circle and despite the best efforts of the Dee defence the ball bobbled past them all and away from Janice McVeigh’s outstretched leg into the far corner of the goal.

Donaghadee struggled to get into their rhythm on the gravel, with wide players Carmen Van Der Schyff and Emily Morris having to drop increasingly deeper in defence meaning that forwards Kerrie Turtle and Tasha Paxton were isolated when the ball did make it forward. It wasn’t a good day for our Vickies either – both Vickie Pollock and Vicky O’Neill, playing in unfamiliar central midfield roles, received foot injuries from high-speed balls at close range – ouch!

As Vickie limped off to the sideline, another break from Saintfield ended in a speculative shot on goal which yet again seemed to jump over Dee sticks on its way into the goal. And a few minutes later Donaghadee found themselves 3-0 down when Saintfield forwards intercepted a hit out and converged on the goal, outnumbering the red and green and reaping the rewards.

Donaghadee regrouped at halftime and produced a far more competitive match the second half. Natalie Jamieson, by this time sporting bloodied knees and elbows from a particularly robust Saintfield tackle, was covering plenty of ground both in defence and attack, and Georgia Ferguson was her usual calm self making good progress with a series of forays down the right.

The Dee were starting to show their ability in attack and any time Saintfield broke forward, Deborah Gilmour was waiting to step in and clear the danger. Her defensive partner, Lisa Higgins, who was probably the most experienced player on gravel (oldest?!) was there to cover on the few occasions the ball broke into the circle.

However, just as the Dee thought they might shade the second half, a penalty corner to Saintfield resulted in a melee of players converging around the penalty spot, with a fourth goal the result. Final score 4-0 to Saintfield, and Donaghadee looking forward to getting back onto astroturf next week when they play Ards 5ths away, pass back 1pm!

Many thanks to Lynsey Sloan for umpiring, it was good to catch up with the former Dee player.
