16/4/16 Donaghadee LHC 2XI 0-1 Pegasus

Junior League 8: Donaghadee LHC 2XI 0-1 Pegasus 4XI
Donaghadee 2XI welcomed Pegasus 4XI to Bangor Grammar on Saturday for their final home match of the 2015/16 season. With last week’s encounter against Ballynahinch conceded by the opposition, Donaghadee were glad to get the match underway to enjoy their penultimate league fixture of the year.

Donaghadee started the match strongly making much of the early attacking play. Caitland Crockett frequently found forwards Maura Hennessey and Angela Parker well positioned to put early pressure on the Pegasus defence although a super shot from Maura was unfortunately denied by the Pegasus goalkeeper.

On a separate attack Emily Morris spotted Karen Fegan positioned on the left post and quickly played the ball to Karen who deflected the ball into the back of the net just as the umpire’s whistle blew having spotted an infringement outside the circle by the defence a moment earlier.  Donaghadee didn’t manage to capitalise on the resulting free.

After the half time team talk Pegasus appeared to resume the game with increased gusto and exerted more pressure on the Donaghadee defence.  Lisa Alexander and Debbie Findlater teamed up well with Tasha Paxton to cut out many advances ably flanked by a combination of Lisa Higgins, Elle Fegan and Kate Pounder. During one particular attack down the right Pegasus managed to slip the ball quickly and their left wing obliged by slotting the ball past keeper Janice McVeigh.

Donaghadee pressed ahead to try to square the match up with both Carmen Van Der Schyff and Angela making successful in-roads up the left side of the pitch but the Pegasus defence were alert. Although Donaghadee earned themselves a couple of penalty corners in the second half the Pegasus defence were very quick off their line to deny them a chance to level the match. Nearing the end of the match with Pegasus attempting to put the game out of Donaghadee’s reach, Janice pulled off one of her now customary diving saves in order to keep the girls in red and green in contention but time ultimately ran out.

Somewhat disappointingly for the Dee the final score read 1-0, although the team had enjoyed a competitive match in sunny conditions. Many thanks to Brian McKee for umpiring. Donaghadee 2XI play Saintfield away next Saturday for their final match of the season.

Dates for the Diary
The AGM has now been confirmed for Wednesday 4th May at 7.30pm in Donaghadee Rugby Club with the season’s proceedings being wrapped up on Friday 20th May at the End of Season Do, venue to be confirmed.

2/4/16 North Down 5XI 5-2 Donaghadee LHC 2XI

Junior League 8: North Down 5XI 5-2 DLHC 2XI
Donaghadee 2XI met North Down 5XI for the third time this season last Saturday and although North Down had won the previous meetings Donaghadee went into the game positive having gained valuable experience from the matches the previous weeks.

Donaghade started the game well with the midfielders Karen Fegan, Caitland Crockett and Tasha Paxton trying to break through the North Down defence. As North Down made a break, the Dee defence Debbie Findlater, Lisa Alexander and Tori Rollo cleared the ball to Elle Fegan and Angela Parker who were doing a lot of running to try and stretch the home side.

Some neat interplay saw them carry the ball to the attacking circle where Karen Fegan was able to score from a  cross from the right. North Down were quick to retaliate by winning themselves several penalty corners though and through well rehearsed routines, slipped three past the Dee defence before half time.

Dee stepped up their play with some impressive attacking runs from both Nicki Robinson and Kate Pounder but were denied any reward for their efforts. North Down retaliated with some neat passing work and, carving their way past Melissa Rollo and Lisa Alexander, they got a neat deflection by their left wing in the circle.

After the turn around Dee were quick on the attack with Caitland and Tasha weaving though the North Down defence with a cross to Karen Fegan who secured her second goal of the match. North  Down were quick to pressure Dee’s defence; as Janice McVeigh saved their shot Melissa cleared the ball but was it intercepted by a North Down player who won another penalty corrner. The initial strike was saved but not cleared and North swept the rebound into the back of the net, leaving the final score 5-2 to the home side.

Many thanks to Carolyn Scott for umpiring. The 2XI are next in action at home to Ballynahinch 2XI on Saturday, passback 1pm. The 1XI wrap up their season away to Newcastle on Wednesday night secure in the knowledge that they have enough points to ensure their Senior 3 safety for next season.

19/3/16 Queens 5-1 Donaghadee LHC 2XI

Junior League 8: Queens 5-1 Donaghadee LHC 2XI
Donaghadee 2XI travelled to the Dub on Saturday to play Queens 5XI on a sunny spring day. Having recently played Queens in the home fixture which finished in a 1-1 draw Donaghadee were hopeful of gaining some points from this fixture in their continued league campaign.

Both teams began the match with gusto however it wasn’t long before the Queens’ strikers put themselves ahead with a goal from open play. Anxious not to let the opposition get too far ahead too early, Donaghadee’s midfield trio of Karen Fegan, Emily Morris and Tasha Paxton pressed ahead looking to feed the ball through to the young forwards of Elle Fegan and Angela Parker.

Queens were quick to stamp out the forwards’ efforts and turn the ball around exerting pressure on Melissa Rollo and Deborah Gilmour who were alert to the Queens’ advances. Although Queens added another goal to their tally, Tasha picked up a loose ball and carried it forward, slotting the ball past the Queens’ keeper. As the half time whistle blew with Donaghadee only 2-1 down, they were still well in contention in the game and looked to level matters up in the second half.

Queens however had other ideas and opened the second half with a period of sustained pressure in the Donaghadee circle however due to very tight marking and channelling of the Queens’ forwards by the experienced Dee defence of Debbie Findlater, Tori Rollo and Lisa Alexander and some exemplary diving saves by keeper Janice McVeigh, Queens just managed to win themselves long corners and free hits outside the circle as opposed to a goal.

Although Donaghadee thought they were well prepared with two extra players Kate Pounder and Lisa Higgins who slotted in playing various positions throughout the game adding skill and fresh legs where required, Queens had five extra bodies to choose from which resulted in Donaghadee being unable to compete with their momentum. The home side added another goal during open play followed by two late penalty corner conversions sealing their victory at 5-1.

Many thanks to Nicola Patton for umpiring.  Donaghadee enjoy a free weekend for Easter and then resume their league action against North Down 5XI away on Saturday 2nd April.Donaghadee 2XI travelled to the Dub on Saturday to play Queens 5XI on a sunny spring day. 12/3/16 Coleraine 3-1 Donaghadee LHC 1XI

Senior League 3: Coleraine 3-1 Donaghadee LHC 1XI
Only Donaghadee Ladies’ 1XI were in action last weekend, and they headed north to take on Senior League 3 leaders, Coleraine, in the penultimate game of the Dee’s season.

Coleraine have been flying high over the last two seasons – having been promoted as convincing winners of Senior 4 last year – and Donaghadee have been on the wrong end of a couple of heavy defeats against this side. The luck has to change at some stage however and Captain Ali Lawther gave a rousing pre-match team talk to buoy the ranks.

It must have had some sort of effect as, thanks to plenty of hard work, no small fortune and a string of outstanding saves from Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam, the first half was scoreless. While Coleraine undoubtedly posed a great threat going forward, the Donaghadee defence proved up to the task; Kat McFarlane and Helen Hooks tucking in tight in midfield and trying to use the wide channels to attack when the chance arose. With Siobhan marshalling Amy Long, Paige Reilly and Lisa Higgins in front of her, there was no way through for the home forwards and Donaghadee certainly deserved to be level at half time.

In fact it was Donaghadee who drew first blood in the second half thanks to Tasha Paxton using her pace to get to the back line and excellent movement off the ball by Kerrie Turtle to distract the last defender. Tasha was able to thread a keeper-beating pinpoint cross to the waiting Carolyn Scott who made no mistake with her sixth goal of the season. This seemed to stir Coleraine back into action and, with both Tasha and Carolyn now carrying slight injury niggles, Sarah Harkness suffering a nasty accidental ball to the head and no subs for Donaghadee, Coleraine began to exert more pressure and push higher up the pitch, swamping the Donaghadee midfield.

It wasn’t long before the pressure told and Coleraine were back on equal terms. Despite Donaghadee’s grim determination to hang on, Coleraine scored a further two goals to secure the Senior 3 title in front of their support and Ulster Hockey officials who were on hand to present them with the cup – congratulations to them. Final game of the season for DLHC 1XI is away to Newcastle, date still to be confirmed. DLHC 2XI next play on Saturday away to Queen’s at the Dub, passback 2.30pm.

5/3/16 Donaghadee LHC 1XI 1-1 Newry and Instonians 0-0 Donaghadee LHC 2XI

Senior League 3: DLHC 1XI 1-1 Newry
Donaghadee Ladies’ 1XI took another step towards maintaining their Senior 3 status in an absorbing 1-1 draw at home to Newry on Saturday. Newry started the match one point ahead of the Dee in the table, albeit having played a game more, with both teams eager to press home some sort of advantage by the time the league tables were totted up at the end of the day.

On a bitingly cold but clear day Donaghadee started brightly with early pressure on the Newry defence by Carolyn Scott almost feeding young forward Caitland Crockett, but wily defending from the Newry backs snuffed out any real opportunity. There was plenty of space for Donaghadee to run into down the attacking flanks, with Sarah Harkness showing some neat distribution for Kerrie Turtle, Ruth Coulter and Tasha Paxton to try to make inroads in these channels. Again, the attacks were thwarted before any real danger threatened the Newry circle.

Somewhat against the run of play and, as a result of some cagey defending by Donaghadee who were seemingly unable to make a clean clearance, a Newry forward got her stick to the ball to poke it past Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam to give her team the lead. Back at it went Donaghadee and it didn’t take long before an attacking penalty corner brought joy for the home side. An initial strike by Ali Lawther rebounded straight to the stick of her midfield partner Helen Hooks, who calmly dinked the ball round the keeper.

With both teams aware of what was at stake, it was the tale of the defences in the second half, with Claire Stewart marshalling Amy Long, Paige Reilly and Kat McFarlane at the back to prevent any more breakthroughs by the Newry forwards, and neither side really created too many clear cut chances. 1-1 was probably a fair final result, given the evenness of play on the day. Thanks to Brian McKee for umpiring.

In a twist to the Senior 3 table standings, Enniskillen were removed from the league after failing to fulfil 5 fixtures, so with all associated points deducted, Donaghadee now sit two points above Newry and 9 above Newcastle at the bottom of the table – and everything still to play for in the remaining two games in the race for Senior 3 safety. The first of those matches is on Saturday when the Dee travel to confirmed Senior 3 champions, Coleraine.

Junior 8: Instonians 2XI 0-0 DLHC 2XI
It was end to end action on Friday night as DLHC’s 2XI travelled to Shaws Bridge to take on Instonians in the reverse fixture for this season. It was always going to be a hotly contested match with both teams sitting on the same points in the league table and it was everything to play for after Inst nabbed a last minute goal back in November to steal the points.

It was with this in mind that DLHC approached the game with determination which led to the girls in red and green making some initial strong attacks shortly after passback. Emily Morris passed the ball from midfield to right winger Maura Hennessy who turned in a super cross to Caitland Crockett in the circle. Her shot was on target but the Instonians’ keeper was lucky to get a boot to it and saw the ball wide. With 3 more attacks this time coming up the left and centre the Dee were unlucky not to hit the backboard, but these attacks seemed to rouse Instonians and their attacks came fast and furious for the rest of the half. Their attempts were futile however as a solid defence of Tori and Melissa Rollo and Lisa Alexander were able to very confidently thwart the home side’s attacks.

The second half was again end to end with some fantastic defensive/offensive team work on the left by mother-daughter players Karen and Elle Fegan and Amy Long and Angela Parker on the right breaking down play and creating some very exciting attacks for Donaghadee. Instonians had their own attacking moments, winning two short corners but both strikes were confidently cleared by Donaghadee keeper Janice McVeigh to keep the sheet clean.

The game finished with a nil all draw at the end of a very end to end game by two very evenly match teams. Many thanks to Kerrie Turtle for umpiring. The 2XI are next in action away to Queen’s on 19th March.

27/2/16 Lurgan 3-2 Donaghadee LHC 1XI and Owls 2-1 Donaghadee LHC 2XI

Intermediate Plate round 2: Lurgan 3XI 3-2 DLHC 1XI (AET)
Donaghadee LHC 1XI travelled to Lurgan last Friday night in the second round of the Intermediate Plate, having been given a bye in the first round thanks to Ballyclare conceding. Despite missing several first team regulars it was an evenly contested affair with Lurgan scoring first but Donaghadee equalising through Kerry Kennedy’s shot. Play continued in much the same vein in the second half, with Lurgan scoring early and Tasha Paxton on hand this time to equalise for the Dee.

With the score all square at the final whistle, the teams turned around for extra time. With things still level and penalty strokes looming, Lurgan won a penalty corner in the dying minutes which they converted at the third attempt to book their place in the next round. Best of luck to them. It’s back to league action this week for the 1XI, in their final home game of the season, against Newry. Pass back 1pm at Bangor Grammar.

Junior League 8: Owls 2XI 2-1 DLHC 2XI

Donaghadee 2XI played Owls away on Saturday at Roughfort Road in the league. The scheduled encounter between these two teams was due to take place on a Friday night mid January but frost got the better of the pitch on that occasion. What a difference a few weeks makes as the match was played in lovely sunny conditions on Saturday. Donaghadee were without the luxury of having rolling subs for the first time all season and with several of the players having been called up to play for the 1XI the previous night there were some leg-weary players.

With their team of young players, Owls exerted early pressure on the Dee defence of Lisa Alexander, Debbie Findlater and Tori Rollo and after a period of scrambling around the Dee circle, the home side eventually just nudged the ball over the line to put themselves ahead with a scrappy goal. Donaghadee retaliated and with a free hit taken quickly by Lisa Higgins around the half way line, the ball was played out to Emily Morris who found Vickie Pollock lurking unmarked just inside the Dee circle. Vickie struck the ball well, wrong-footing the Owls keeper, to level the match at one each.

After the break both teams looked eager to get ahead resulting in chances being created at both ends keeping the opposing defences busy. The Dee earned themselves a couple of penalty corners, the first of which was taken by Karen Fegan but cleared to safety by the Owls defence.  Next Angela Parker made a great strike out towards the left post but the deflection from Emily was swiftly cleared out by the keeper. Owls were quick to break when they won the ball in their half but the Dee defence were alert to close them down on several occasions.

Feeling time running out on the clock, Deborah Gilmour took a long corner quickly and when Caitland Crockett unleashed a super shot from the edge of the circle, it looked like the Dee would go ahead until the Owls keeper, who had a great game, managed to punch the ball over the cross bar at full stretch. With Donaghadee reeling from their denied opportunity Owls seized their chance and quickly broke to the other end of the pitch earning themselves a penalty corner in the last minute of the game.  The Owls forward struck the ball so well, that even though keeper Janice McVeigh got her stick to the ball, the power was sufficient to rattle the backboard and leave Janice’s hand tingling for some time.

Disappointingly for the Dee the final score read 2-1.  Many thanks to Ali Lawther for umpiring. Donaghadee 2XI travel Shaw’s Bridge this Friday evening to play Instonians to continue their league action.
