Senior League 3: DLHC 1XI 3-1 Enniskillen
Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI welcomed Enniskillen to BGS for the first home match of the 2018/19 season.

Donaghadee were missing defensive stalwarts Paige Reilly and Claire Stewart but in testament to the club’s burgeoning strength in depth, Tasha Moore joined regular Amy Long at the back, with midfielder Alison Stevenson showing her versatility by dropping back into the centre of defence.

They were given time to settle into their unfamiliar surroundings thanks to the initial stages being dominated by Donaghadee going forward, with captain Kerry Kennedy pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch: pinpoint passes going left and right encouraging Sarah-Louise Baird and Helen Hooks to burst forward at will.

A great pass found forward Carolyn Scott in the attacking circle and she managed to find enough space to unleash an absolute bobbler of a reverse stick shot. With sufficient air to positively dribble over the last defender’s stick, the complete lack of pace thoroughly wrong footed the keeper and trickled inside the far post in slow motion to give Donaghadee an early lead.

As the half wore on, the visitors began to establish more of a foothold in the game as they went in search of the equaliser, and Donaghadee needed to be on their mettle to thwart the danger. Laura Boyle was on hand to break up several forays down the right, while Tasha was reading play brilliantly on the left to turn defence to attack each time the ball came within her reach.

Donaghadee keeper Siobhan McAdam was vocal in organising her defence but Enniskillen’s attacking purple patch continued after the half time break and a goalmouth scramble saw the line breached: 1-1.

Donaghadee were quick to get back on the attack however, with both Emma and Leanna McGimpsey-Young firing off shots to test the visiting keeper. With the Dee now beginning to exert more pressure on the Skins defence, a number of penalty corners were awarded and the red and green took full advantage to take a 2-1 lead.

Sarah-Louise is thoroughly convinced that the ball crossed the line from her strike and Kerry is adamant that she got the final touch to take it beyond the keeper and you wouldn’t really like to fall out with either, so we’ll give both the credit and say it was a fine joint effort to put the team ahead.

With Enniskillen finding it difficult to clear the ball – thanks in no small part to sterling effort by Lisa Higgins who seemed to stop every ball that came near her in the middle of the pitch – Donaghadee were able to add a third to put the result beyond doubt.

There was no mistaking the goalscorer this time: Carolyn, receiving the ball with her back to goal in the circle, provided Kerry with the layoff she needed to fire off an inch perfect shot that evaded the keeper’s outstretched leg to nestle just inside the upright.

A fitting finale to the match for Donaghadee and no mean feat against a team whose unbeaten run stretched back 18 months! Many thanks to Jon Scott for umpiring duties. The 1XI are next in action when they head way out west to take on Derg Valley on Saturday.

Junior League 8B: DLHC 2XI 3-2 Saintfield 3XI

Natalie in control in defence against Saintfield

Natalie in control in defence against Saintfield

Saturday 29th saw Donaghadee 2XI kick off their assault on the Junior 8B league against Saintfield 3XI. After a promising season last year the girls are aiming for a top position in the league this year and confidence has been boosted by the return of so many past players who have re-joined the ranks, it was great to see them all out in force for the first match of the season.

Saintfield had passback and made quick work of their first attack which was ably defended by Siobhan McAdam in goals and her team of defenders – Georgia Ferguson, Natalie Jamieson and Hannah McAdam. Excellent defending resulted in some good end to end play with well thought out distribution from the screens Rebecca Bolton and Rowena Moore – especially given that they were both playing out of their usual positions.

Great teamwork from the back saw the ball carried forward into Saintfield’s circle where Kerrie Turtle used it to win a penalty corner. Having practised these at training during the week, Vicky O’Neill stepped up to give an accurate push out to an awaiting Hannah at the top of the circle who executed a clean shot to secure Donaghadee the first goal of the match and a 1-0 lead.

Play continued and Saintfield fought back with a quick break pushing into Donaghadee’s circle and managing to sneak an equalising goal in. Not content with a draw, the Dee girls continued on the attack, Vicky having some great tackles and passes in the centre to Emily Morris, who produced a terrific run up the pitch (with unbelievable energy given she had taken part in the Bangor 10k earlier that day!) and gave a perfect pass to Kerrie who was able to get in a shot on goal resulting in the Dee going 2-1 up.

More great passing ensued with some lovely linking between Carmen van der Schyff and Connie Hampton, along with Tasha Paxton putting in the miles to drive the ball up for frantic attacks on the Saintfield defence. Saintfield were not backing down though and were relentless in their counterattacking. Nailbiting to watch but Natalie and Georgia remained reliable and calm as ever in defence, clearing balls to the ever waiting sticks of Rebecca and Rowena who were both able to work together ensuring the balls continued up the pitch towards the forwards. Unfortunately Saintfield broke through the defence with a cracking high shot to the back of the net equalising the score to 2-2.

Half-time saw a good few changes on the pitch with Carmen doing a great job of stepping up to the challenge of defence on the left to allow Hannah her more favourable position of a forward. Vicky proved herself a valuable asset in centre midfield, distributing the balls for Emily, Tasha and Connie (always on the back post!) to pick up and continue several attacks on the opposition.

Play continued evenly until a few minutes before full time when Tasha made a heroic run up the right wing, bringing the ball along the back line and with a textbook move passed to Hannah’s waiting stick who duly converted it into a goal putting the final score at 3-2 to Donaghadee.

Considering this was the 2XI first league match and players are starting to get settled into the team, everyone gave 100% effort, working brilliantly together. Most impressive was the willingness of all to put themselves ‘anywhere they are needed’ and showing the true meaning of a team sport.

Many thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring, the seconds have no match next week and resume their league fixtures on Saturday 13th October away to CI 5ths.

Wine-Tasting Evening a huge success

REPORT | 22 Sept 2018: Bangor 2-2 DLHC 1XI

Captain Kerry Kennedy in action against Bangor

Captain Kerry Kennedy in action against Bangor

Donaghadee Ladies’ 1XI began their league campaign on Saturday away to neighbours Bangor.

This has been the opening fixture for these teams for the last few seasons, with two draws and a 2-1 Donaghadee victory, and this season’s encounter proved just as close.

Bangor scored very quickly from first pass back with a goal that Donaghadee will be disappointed not to have dealt with better but from that point any early season nerves settled and Donaghadee fought well to establish themselves in the game.

There was joy for Helen Hooks and Sarah-Louise Baird down the Dee’s left and they made numerous forays into high attacking areas, linking with high forward Emma McGimpsey-Young to create a number of good circle penetrations.

One such attack led to a penalty corner and the resulting strike was only partly parried by the home defence. The clearance fell to Kerry Kennedy at the top of the circle and her reverse stick effort found the back of the net to bring the Dee level.

Donaghadee then did their best to double their goal tally with Carolyn Scott attempting to put the Dee into the lead but the effort went wide, and the two teams went into the break on level terms.

Donaghadee sustained a period of pressure from the Bangor attack early in the second half but wayward shots and a good marshalling of the Dee defence by Claire Stewart, Paige Reilly and Laura Boyle kept keeper Siobhan McAdam safe between the Dee posts.

Having weathered that particular storm, Donaghadee began to find themselves with a lot more space; Catherine Armstrong made speedy yards down the right while through the middle, Ali Stevenson started to pick out passes to feed the forwards.

One great link up saw Hannah McAdam mere inches away from tipping in at the right hand post and the Bangor keeper was required to smother a ball when Lisa Higgins burst through into the circle.

Further pressure came from the right when Amy Long was able to push up from defence and with Bangor hemmed in, Kerry carried into the circle yet again. Her shot will have to go down as a strong contender as goal of the season – yes, one game in.

The Bangor keeper had advanced several paces off her line to close down the danger as she saw Kerry approaching the edge of the circle. Riding a couple of tackles, the Dee midfielder was able to execute the most sublime, audacious lob which lifted over the rooted keeper and dipped just under the crossbar to give Donaghadee a fitting 2-1 lead.

With seconds left on the stopwatch Bangor mounted one final attack. As the final whistle blew, a penalty corner was awarded for an infringement which Donaghadee felt had happened outside their defensive circle. Bangor duly piled every player forward for their one final opportunity – which they grasped with delight to ensure the honours finished even yet again for this fixture.

Final score 2-2 with thanks to Mike Smyth for umpiring. The 1XI are next in action on Saturday when they welcome Enniskillen to BGS for a 1pm passback before the 2XI get their league campaign underway at home to Saintfield 3XI, passback 2.30pm.

REPORT | Reds v Whites and Match Ball Sponsorship 2018/19

The Red team in the Reds v Whites match, Sept 2018

The Red team in the Reds v Whites match, Sept 2018

In the final practice match of preseason, members of Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club took part in an entertaining intra-club game on Friday night with their traditional season opener, Reds v Whites.

It was a good opportunity for a number of new faces to pull on the red (or white!) and green of the Dee for the first time and also for coach Brian Mckee and captains Kerry Kennedy and Kerrie Turtle to have a look at potential line ups for both 1XI and 2XI for the incoming season.

The game didn’t disappoint with the Whites going ahead in the first quarter thanks to a lovely finish by Katie McKee. The play was end to end, with solo runs, great link up play and solid defending on show from both sides, before the Reds equalised in the third quarter with Tasha Paxton scoring at that end.

The match finished in an honorable draw (1-1) with thanks to Willie McAdam and Carolyn Scott for umpiring. Both teams will look to make a few final tweaks at training on Wednesday night before league matches start on Saturday, with the 1XI opening their campaign away to Bangor.

The 2XI’s opposition, South Antrim 3XI have withdrawn from Junior league 8B so the Seconds will begin their campaign at home to Saintfield 3XI on Saturday 29th September.

Match Ball Sponsorship
The Club is once again running its hugely successful Match Ball Sponsorship for 2018/19, allowing local businesses and individuals to actively support DLHC during the season.

Your business will feature extensively on all the club’s social media channels in the week leading up to the match you have chosen to sponsor with a warm invitation to the match itself on the Saturday (we do a great sideline tea/coffee/biccies service!), followed by coverage in match reports which are distributed to each player, published on our website and also in each week’s local papers.

DLHC is funded entirely by the players with fees going to cover pitch and insurance costs not to mention equipment, first aid kits and the like, so all sponsorship money raised helps us concentrate on performances on the pitch without worrying about financial shortfall off it.

Every home match slot was taken last year and the club anticipates demand to be high again this year, so get in touch to secure a slot and to get involved with one of North Down’s most vibrant clubs at dlhc@hotmail.co.uk

REPORT | 10 Sept 2018: Pre-season Friendlies and 2XI fixtures

DLHC 1XI keep a clean sheet against Ards in their pre-season friendly

DLHC 1XI keep a clean sheet against Ards in their pre-season friendly

It’s been a busy few weeks for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club with both pre-season starting and a number of friendlies taking place as preparations continue apace for the beginning of the league programmes.

DLHC 2XI kicked off proceedings on Friday 31st August when they welcomed Bangor 2XI to Bangor Grammar. With a number of new faces in the line up, and pitch work only having started a couple of weeks previously, it was a strong showing from the girls in red and green, earning a 1-1 draw when Carmen van der Schyff set up Kerrie Turtle.

The 1XI were next in action last Wednesday and they put in a performance showing few signs of ring rustiness with a heartening display against Coleraine – Catherine Armstrong opening her goal scoring for the season with a fine solo effort which gave the visiting keeper no chance.

Continuing on from that, the 1XI then played Ards 3XI on Saturday past, and Catherine was on target again, along with sister Kerry Kennedy who scored two to give Donaghadee a 3-0 win in a much more evenly contested match than the scoreline suggests.

The 2XI fixtures have now been published further to the 1XI’s a number of weeks ago, and the team opens their Junior 8B campaign at home to South Antrim 3XI on Saturday 22nd September.

While fixtures currently only run until the beginning of February, there are plans for a round robin competition for the teams in Junior 7, 8A and 8B, so it will be an interesting season for the 2XI once again, after the Cup run last season which took them all the way to the semi final of the Minor Cup.

For full fixtures, see the DLHC website: www.DonaghadeeLHC.co.uk/fixtures-201819/

Pre-season continues for everyone in the club – including all new faces who are most welcome – every Wednesday from 7.30pm at Bangor Grammar School.

ARTICLE | 28th Aug 2018: 1XI on the road in 2018/19

Preparations are well underway for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club with preseason stick work now in full swing on Wednesday evenings at Bangor Grammar.

It has been fantastic to see not only all the regular faces reporting for duty but also a number of new starlets looking to make their mark at the club during the incoming season.

The 2XI remain in Junior 7 and at time of writing have yet to have their fixtures confirmed, but the 1XI know they will face neighbours Bangor (A) on the opening day of the season, Saturday 22nd September.

With a number of clubs rejoining Senior 3, the DLHC girls representing the 1XI will cover much of the Province during the course of the season, with away trips to Castlederg (6th October), Enniskillen (19th January), Newcastle (16th February) and Newry (2nd March).

There are also a number of forays to the Greater Belfast area with trips to Malone (13th October), Ballynahinch (17th November), Parkview (1st December), Malone (2nd February), South Antrim (23rd March) and PSNI on 6th April.

A packed schedule, plenty of miles (there’s bound to be at least one bus trip in there!) and plenty to look forward to! See the full list of fixtures at http://www.donaghadeelhc.co.uk/fixtures-201819.

The action kicks off this weekend however, with a friendly against Bangor at BGS, pass back 7.30pm on Friday night in what will be a great run out to help with match fitness.

And, if you’re free on Saturday (1st September), a team of DLHC players will be competing in Bloomfield Shopping Centre’s Community Sports Challenge and they’d love your support! Head down to cheer the girls on as they bid to win £2000 for the club between 12 noon and 4pm.

To get involved with one of the the friendliest, most social clubs in North Down, training takes place every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm on the astroturf at Bangor Grammar or email dlhc@hotmail.co.uk for more information.

16th August 2018: DLHC Needs YOU!

stick and ballWith two teams playing in Ulster Hockey leagues, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club has plenty to offer all females of 15 or over.

The Club’s 1XI finished last season third in the league, the best position at the end of the season for many years while the 2XI enjoyed a brilliant run which took them all the way to the Minor Plate Semi Final.

With structured training sessions under the tutelage of vastly experienced Head Coach Brian McKee (who will undoubtedly have picked up loads of new tips and tricks for the players to try following the recent Women’s Hockey World Cup in London!), each Wednesday night offers a great opportunity to work on individual skills and team play.

Home matches are played at Bangor Grammar School most Saturdays and there are plenty of social events already pencilled in off the pitch too, including the DLHC Wine-Tasting on Saturday 29th September in Donaghadee Sailing Club, a Christmas Movie event, the Christmas Dinner (both tbc) and the fourth Hockettes on the Piste ski trip at the end of March 2019.

Past, present and future members of DLHC are encouraged to take part in the first pitch session of preseason next Wednesday, 22nd August from 7.30-8.30pm at BGS and all new faces are more than welcome. Contact dlhc@hotmail.co.uk for more information or get in touch via Facebook or Twitter.

6 August 2018: What a weekend for our sport!

Ireland Women after their 3-1 victory over the USA, 22nd July 2018

Ireland Women after their 3-1 victory over the USA, 22nd July 2018

It was a fabulous weekend for Irish women’s hockey with Ireland Women surpassing every expectation by winning silver medals in the Women’s Hockey World Cup played out at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London.

With hosts England exiting at the quarter final stage at the hands of the eventual winners, the Netherlands, and various other seeds such as Argentina, Germany and Australia all falling by the wayside, Ireland progressed thanks to cool heads in two shootouts, firstly against India in the quarters (whom they had already beaten in the pool stage) and Spain in the semis.

How wonderful to see hockey taking centre stage, with full coverage on two TV channels, and members of Donaghadee LHC took full advantage with many from the club gathering to watch the final in Pier 36 on Sunday. They were treated to a Dutch hockey masterclass; the girls in orange putting 6 unanswered strikes away against the Green Army with incredible movement off the ball and terrific stickwork when in possession.

There is certainly no shame in losing to the number one side in the world, especially considering the scintillating hockey the Dutch played throughout, but Ireland, second lowest ranked in the tournament, won plaudits from all quarters for their gutsy, attacking hockey and never-say-die attitudes, and it has been a pleasure watching them over the last two weeks.

Ireland O50s excel at the Masters World Cup
The Masters World Cup has also been taking place – at the same club where the Dee played when they toured in Barcelona in April 2014 no less – and there were jubilant scenes when Ireland O50s beat Australia in the final on Sunday morning to bag the gold medals there. The Ireland team included a number of the Ulster O50s against whom Donaghadee played last April, so everyone in the club would like to pass on their congratulations to the whole squad on an awesome achievement (and we’re delighted to have played even a miniscule role on their path to victory!)

Inspired? Come and join the Dee!
If that lot isn’t a huge inspiration, we don’t know what is! If you’ve been watching the matches and are keen to get involved, join a new club, give it a try after a break or follow on from school hockey – come and give Donaghadee Ladies a go. We have two more sessions of Bootcamp at Crommelin Park in Donaghadee this Wednesday and next from 7.30-8.30pm and then we’re back on the astroturf at Bangor Grammar from Wednesday 22nd August, 7.30pm. All new faces are most welcome, so if you’re female and 15 or over, come and see us! For more information visit www.donaghadeelhc.co.uk, Facebook.com/DonaghadeeLHC, Twitter @donaghadeelhc or email dlhc@hotmail.co.uk

Wine-Tasting Tickets now on sale
There’s plenty going on off the pitch too, and the first fundraiser of the new season is the much anticipated Wine-Tasting Evening on Saturday 29th September in Donaghadee Sailing Club. Tickets are now on sale at £15 each and demand is high, so secure yours quickly by emailing dlhc@hotmail.co.uk or speaking to any club member.

2 Aug 18: DLHC Wine-Tasting Evening and more!

DLHC Wine-Tasting EveningThe fixtures may still be being finalised by Uster Hockey for the 2018/19 season but the diary is already filling up for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club, with a number of dates already pencilled in for events both on and off the pitch.

On the pitch, pre-season Bootcamp is now halfway through its four week programme – although it’s not too late to join in if you haven’t been yet! With the emphasis on fun, fitness and fresh air, the girls have enjoyed a good variety of exercise at the gravel pitch at Crommelin Park, Donaghadee with circuits, sprints and short bursts of cardio work completed so far. There are another two Wednesdays to go and then attention will switch back to the astroturf at Bangor Grammar (starting Wednesday 22nd August).

Again everyone is most welcome, especially if you’ve been inspired by the terrific progress made by Ireland Women at the Hockey World Cup in recent weeks, whether you’re looking to progress to ladies’ hockey from school, would like to get back into the game after a break, or just fancy joining one of the fastest growing and most social clubs in the North Down area.

There are already several off-pitch events in the pipeline too, the soonest of which will be the hotly anticipated DLHC Wine Tasting Evening taking place on Saturday 29th September at Donaghadee Sailing Club. The club is delighted to have secured the hugely experienced Angie Alexander to guide us through some of the great wine regions of the world such as France, Germany, Italy and Spain, and onwards through some of the new world wine challengers such as Australia, New Zealand and South Africa as well as through some lesser known but equally intriguing wine producing nations such as Croatia, Canada and most recently England.

With qualifications from the globally recognised Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Angie has also worked harvest for a wine producer in Burgundy, France which included picking, collecting, sorting and crushing the grapes as well as monitoring the early fermentation process in both barrels and tanks, so there is little doubt that she is very well positioned to suggest which wines, grape varieties and regions to try when choosing your next bottle. Firmly of the belief that there is a wine out there to suit everyone’s individual taste or palate, not to mention wallet, there is little doubt Angie will esure this will be an evening not to be missed!

Tickets are £15 and will be available from all club members, or by emailing dlhc@hotmail.co.uk. Numbers will be limited so be sure to secure your tickets early!

For a full list of upcoming dates for the diary visit www.donaghadeelhc.co.uk or see the club’s Facebook page for more details.
