Junior League 9: Holywood 2XI 3-0 DLHC 2XI With the 1XI of Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club enjoying a free week last weekend, the red and green flag was being flown by the 2XI as they travelled to Strathearn to play neighbours Holywood.
With a strong home defence putting lots of pressure on any Donaghadee attacks, Holywood managed to frustrate the Dee for much of the match, despite Donaghadee enjoying a great first quarter.
Holywood began to grow into the game and in the second quarter managed to score a good goal to take the lead. The back four of Floss, Jemma, Lauren and Mia were undeterred as they fought hard to defend their keeper Janice who, in turn made some amazing saves which earned her the Player of the Match award.
There was plenty of action in the circles as the two teams tried to find the next goal with both sides showing great skill in attack and defence. The Donaghadee players showed great versatility too when usual centre back Tori stepped up to fill the gap left in the centre of midfield by injured captain Natalie.
Unfortunately the Holywood defence remained steadfast, keeping out the Donaghadee attacks despite numerous forays forward from midfield with Erin doing a great job of feeding the front three of Kerrie, Sarah and Vicky in the circle.
Unfortunately for the Dee, it was Holywood who came out the winners after scoring two goals in relatively quick succession during the last quarter to seal a 3-0 victory.
Thanks to Lisa Higgins for umpiring duties. The 2XI’s next match is at home on Saturday, pass back 2.30pm against Ards 4XI.
Line the Pitch with Pounds We’re a mere week away from our first £1 collection to see how far along the halfway line we’re going to get when we line up all the £1 coins everyone has been gathering over the last month.
If you’d like to contribute, collect any spare £1 coins (in a Smartie tube if you wish!) and pass them on to any DLHC player before training next Wednesday evening, then keep an eye on social media to see how we’re progressing.
Our aim is to line the halfway line with £1 coins from one side of the pitch to the other by the end of the season to raise money for our club funds, so all help is much appreciated!
Helen was on target with the 1XI’s first goal (pic taken in sunnier times but we love a good action shot!)
Senior 3: DLHC 1XI 4-1 Derg Valley Following last week’s 9-goal thriller against Kilkeel, Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s 1XI were involved in another high-scoring match this week when they welcomed Derg Valley to Bangor Grammar.
The beautiful weather of the previous few weeks had broken in favour of much more hockey-like weather, and it was utterly dismal. Not cold but a throughly wetting mizzle that ensured the floodlights were on, right from the 1pm pass back.
Donaghadee threatened from the off, when a superb ball straight up the middle from Laura Boyle made it right into the circle but Donaghadee were unable to capitalise on the early chance.
There was plenty of threat down the left too; Sarah-Louise Baird making numerous forays down the flank to drive into the circle, only to be thwarted by the Derg keeper covering her near post well. It was two of the Dee’s midfielders who broke the deadlock though: Kerry Kennedy slipping a pinpoint pass through to Helen Hooks.
Helen’s shot took a hefty deflection off a defender’s stick to completely wrongfoot the keeper and Donaghadee were off an running with the scoring. It was possibly the same unfortunate defender who also got in the way of Sarah-Louise’s shot with the same outcome and Donaghadee were looking good at 2-0.
Shortly after the half-time turnaround, Donaghadee took advantage of space and some tenacious attacking from Vicky O’Neill who popped the ball to Laura. Some nifty stick work allowed her to evade several defenders; twisting and turning to create a chance for herself which she finished with aplomb. 3-0 to Donaghadee.
Derg have a number of forwards who were threatening to break all afternoon and all it took was a missed tackle and a quick dodge for them to pull a goal back.
Getting on the scoreboard galvanised the visitors and they started to enjoy more possession in the Donaghadee half, with the Dee defenders needing to be alert to snuff out the danger; Chloe McGookin protecting Natalie Jamieson on the right and Mia Park doing a great job on the right, while it was great to see Jan Morrow back from university in a Dee shirt.
Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam made two very good saves to clear her lines, followed swiftly by a glove save to palm the ball away to safety.
Having weathered that particular storm, Donaghadee got back on the attack, with Tasha Moore continuing her excellent start to the season: her bursts down the right wing and ability to get to the back post for the cross bringing intent and verve to the Donaghadee attacks.
She was involved in Donaghadee’s fourth goal, when her sniping at the Derg Valley keeper’s feet prevented the ball being cleared cleanly. Carolyn Scott, returning from injury to play in her first game of the season, pounced on the weak clearance to bury the ball in the roof of the net to make it 4-1.
Final score 4-1 to Donaghadee with thanks to Janice McVeigh and Brian McKee for umpiring. The 1XI travel to Ballynahinch on Saturday, pass back there 2.30pm
Senior 3 as at 6th October 2019
Junior 9: DLHC 2XI 2-0 NICS 5XI Following on from scoring the first goal of the season in sunny Lisburn last week, the 2XI secured their first win of the season with a 2-0 win over Civil Service at BGS on Saturday.
The two teams spent the first quarter coming to terms with the lashing rain and slippery conditions underfoot, with Donaghadee adapting well to keep the ball in Civil Service’s half of the pitch; forwards Molly McKee, Vicky O’Neill and Katie McKee all getting a good feel of the ball in the opposition’s
circle.
The Dee girls were enjoying the majority of the play, however, there was one occasion where Civil Service made a break down the left hand side leading to a shot which was heroically saved by Janice McVeigh, taking out one of her own defenders, Jemma Thompson in the process. no hard feelings though, with Jemma declaring, “it was worth it for the
win”.
The first goal came in the third quarter when it was carried up the left wing by Molly McKee gaining at least 25 metres, beating all Civil Service players in her path. Molly then reversed the ball across the circle to the right hand post where twin Katie McKee was eagerly waiting to deflect into the goal.
Captain Natalie Jamison secured the second goal of the match in the last couple of minutes when she connected with the ball just millimetres inside the circle, her shot flying straight into the back of the net past the Service defence and the goal keeper with ease.
These goals were only made possible by the hardworking midfielders Carmen van der Schyff, Finlay Mitchell, Jan Morrow and Erin Hamilton who created space time after time, while the Dee defence held strong with Mia Park, Toria Wrightman, Lauren Bailie and Floss Scott holding the press to keep the ball in the opposition’s half.
It was another real team effort, and Player of the Match was awarded to Molly McKee for her hard work throughout the whole match, creating space and beating Civil Service players like they were not even there!
The team extended their thanks to the Civil Service umpire, to Laura Boyle for stepping up to umpire for Donaghadee, and to Marc Jeffrey for his continued support on the sideline.
The team will hope to continue the winning trend when they head to St Colman’s High on Friday night to play Ballynahinch 2XI, pass back 8.15pm.

Senior 3: DLHC 1XI 4-5 Kilkeel On a bright and pleasantly warm Saturday afternoon, Donaghadee Ladies 1XI welcomed Kilkeel to Bangor Grammar.
Coming off the back of a last gasp 1-0 win over Instonians last Friday night, the team were in good spirits for pass back and it showed.
Donaghadee dominated the opening quarter, with plenty of go forward ball and numerous penalty corners; Tasha Moore coming closest when she pinged a rebound off the keeper’s right post.
The pressure finally told when, having had no luck shooting flat and low against the visiting keeper, Donaghadee changed tack and immediately reaped the reward with Tasha sending a ball crashing into the roof of the net from wide right; a terrific finish to give Donaghadee the lead.
Number 2 followed shortly after with Leanna McGimpsey-Young giving Donaghadee a 2-0 cushion after the first quarter.
The break galvanised Kilkeel and they caught Donaghadee very much on the hop as the second quarter opened; the visitors running the ball virtually unchallenged into the Dee goal before adding a second in quick succession to level the score at 2-2.
Captain Fantastic Helen Hooks then grabbed the game by the scruff when she went on a lung-busting run from her own 25 down the right flank. Evading several tackles, on she carried before unselfishly passing to Leanna in the circle, the Dee forward finishing to put Donaghadee back in the lead: 3-2 at half time.
Back came Kilkeel in the third quarter and Donaghadee’s defence, marshalled by Paige Reilly in the centre, needed to be on their mettle: Laura Boyle breaking up the attacks and Lisa Higgins intercepting on the left and Chloe McGookin on the right as the Dee tried to defend their lead.
Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam made a super double parry but with Donaghadee unable to clear the ball from their circle, the ball just kept coming back and eventually one Kilkeel shot struck gold and back we were, level again: 3-3.
Kilkeel then stretched their lead to 5-3 when they took advantage of a melee at a penalty corner midway through the third quarter but there were signs that Donaghadee were trying to get back into it.
An aerial clearance from the Kilkeel defence was picked out of the air sublimely by Sarah Hooks to get Donaghadee going forward again, while Kerry Kennedy was starting to pull the strings on the right of midfield, winning frees deep into the attacking 25 and picking off passes to her forwards.
Following good work down the left flank by Sarah-Louise Baird, young Dee forward Vicky O’Neill was on hand to pop the ball in from close range at the back post to bring the score back to 5-4.
Kilkeel were able to hang on to the one goal advantage however and 5-4 was how it finished; a breathtaking game with goals galore in which all 12 Dee players gave their all. Thanks to Carolyn Scott for umpiring. The 1XI are next in action on Saturday when they welcome Derg Valley to BGS, pass back 1pm.

Junior 9: South Antrim 2-1 DLHC 2XI The second match of the season for the 2XI of Donaghadee LHC was played away to South Antrim 3XI at Friends School, Lisburn, with the sun splitting the trees on a gorgeous late September day.
The team started off on the back foot, travelling as they did with only 10 players, but this was most definitely not reflected in the quality of the game played.
South Antrim had plenty of attacking intent in the first two quarters, with numerous shots at the Donaghadee goal only to be stopped by goal keeper Janice McVeigh who was in terrific form, ably helped by a strong defensive performance from Mia Park, Toria Wightman, Jemma Thompson and Floss Scott.
With the scoreline still 0-0 going into the final quarter, play was end to end with South Antrim finally opening the scoring before Donaghadee responded with a goal in the next play of the match, with Erin Hamilton getting on the score sheet and recording the team’s first goal of the season.
Unfortunately South Antrim managed to sneak a second goal just before the final whistle, resulting in a 2-1 loss for the Dee girls, but the whole team played an amazing match, allowing only 2 goals in when they were competing at a numerical disadvantage against a strong South Antrim side.
The team’s Player of the Match was awarded to Janice McVeigh for her excellent skills at keeping the ball out of our goal for the majority of the game, and she thanked Marc Jeffry for umpiring.
The 2XI are next in action at home to NICS 4XI on Saturday, pass back 2.30pm.

1XI Player of the Match Chloe and scorer Leanna after the Instonians match
Senior League 3: Instonians 1XI 0-1 Donaghadee LHC 1XI Winning start for Donaghadee.
The Senior 3 league got under way on Friday night with Donaghadee heading to Belfast for their opening fixture away to perennial rivals Instonians.
The home team were quickly into their stride and attacking the Donaghadee circle, but some excellent work by Sarah Hooks, Natalie Jamieson and Lisa Higgins thwarted their initial attempts. A quick ball from the right then found a yellow clad forward at the back post only for Dee keeper Siobhan McAdam to deflect it wide of the post.
Donaghadee drove forward through the congested midfield, where captain Helen Hooks, Laura Boyle and Kerry Kennedy fought for space, whilst Chloe McGookin and Sarah-Louise Baird had success down the flanks as they got the ball up to Leanna McGimpsey-Young and Natasha Moore to attack the home circle.
Another Instonians attack saw Siobhan called into action with successive saves to keep them out, with Sarah sweeping a rebound away. At times it was frantic, but Donaghadee held their ground and kept the ball at bay as the first quarter ended goalless.
A quick two minute break between quarters meant only a short chat before the teams were off and running again. The play continued to be very open with both teams creating opportunities, although with a Laura dropping in slightly deeper the Donaghadee defenders successfully protected their circle.
Up front Donaghadee created chances down both flanks, with young Vicky O’Neill working well with Leanna down the right and Sarah-Louise driving in from the left. Kerry and Leanna both had shots well saved, whilst a well struck penalty corner from Natalie was deflected over by a defender’s stick. So half time arrived and despite the best efforts of both teams it remained scoreless.
Quarter three was similar to the first as Instonians again drove forward and Donaghadee defended stoutly, being pushed deep into their own half. However again some superb work by the whole team kept them out. An Inst penalty corner for a foot in the circle beat the first runner but was well saved by Siobhan, clearing her lines well. Donaghadee broke quickly and only a good save by the home keeper kept Leanna at bay. Three quarters over and still no goals.
With both teams starting to feel the pace – and the heat on a warm muggy evening – the pitch was starting to open up and Donaghadee had their best spell of the game. A couple of driving runs down the left by Sarah-Louise created chances for Leanna, Kerry and Lisa in quick succession, whilst Chloe was finding more space on the right, with Vicky getting a ball in from the right but the defenders just keeping Leanna out.
As we entered the final few minutes both teams were determined not to lose. With Laura and Helen working in tandem to break down an Instonians attack through the centre, the ball was fired quickly forward to find Leanna at halfway, her pace carrying her beyond the lunging tackle and she raced into the 23. The home keeper tried her best, but with a quick flick Leanna was round her and slotted it home, with just over a minute to go.
The whistle blew with a 1-0 win for Donaghadee to start the new season, a superb result in a very closely fought game that neither team deserved to lose; it took a terrific goal to break the deadlock. Captain Helen was delighted to get a win in her first competitive match and the player of the match went to Chloe, though all twelve certainly contributed their part.

Junior 9: DLHC 2XI 0-2 Owls 3XI To begin their 2019/20 season Donaghadee Ladies’ 2XI welcomed an experienced Owls 3XI and, captained by Natalie Jamieson the whole team put up a strong fight right to the final whistle, with Donaghadee fielding a number of new players, including Natalie Brown and Finlay Mitchell who were making their club debut on the pitch for the Dee.
The first goal was scored early in the match by Owls, however goalkeeper Siobhan McAdam kept the ball out of the net for majority of the match, with a number of robust saves to keep the Owls attack at bay. The second and final goal was scored off the back of a short corner on the last play of the match, resulting in a 2-0 loss for Donaghadee, but a loss in score does not equate to a loss in spirit: regardless of a disappointing scoreline, the girls were not downhearted.
There was excellent effort from every player on the pitch but in particular Natalie Jamieson taking the ball from deep in the Dee defence to the top of the attacking circle only to be stopped at the last couple of yards on numerous occasions, and centre backs Toria Wightman and Jemma Thompson, making every effort to prevent the ball coming too close for comfort.
Player of the match was awarded to Jemma Thompson as a team vote. Overall the Dee girls played an excellent match and there is much to look forward to in a promising season as the new players integrate into the team, and after the match, the players extended thank yous to coach Marc Jeffrey, umpire Emily Morris and all the sideline supporters.

DLHC Juniors continues While the numbers may have been small last week for the opening Junior training, there was no small amount of talent on show from the up and coming hockey stars of Donaghadee! With lots of exercises to practice dribbling and passing, not to mention a lively game of ‘Kill the Keeper’* there was plenty of hard work, effort and lots of fun. Line the Pitch with Pounds: DLHC Fundraiser 2019/20 We’ve set ourselves the challenge of forming a row of £1 coins along the halfway line placed edge to edge from one side of the pitch to the other by the end of the season. That’s a massive 55 metres of pound coins by the end of March 2020. Will we be able to do it?
Every £1 saved will get us 2.4 centimetres closer to reaching our goal and we’d love your help! Whether you’re out shopping or coming home after a night out, pop any spare £1s to one side to help us cover that line.
You can either collect your £1 coins in a Smartie tube (proper retro!), or we’ve even got special DLHC Pound Pots for collecting your coins: just speak to any DLHC player and they’ll be happy to give you one.

There was a big turn out for Donaghadee Ladies Hockey Club’s End of Season Dinner on Saturday night. Once the formalities of the AGM were out of the way outgoing captains Kerry Kennedy and Kerrie Turtle led the awards presentations.
It was Kerry herself who took the first award, finishing the season as the 1XI’s top goalscorer – a splendid achievement for a midfielder, not least because most (all?) of her goals were scored in spectacular fashion – no such thing as a tap in for KK!
It was super to see Katie McKee – in her first season at the club – picking up the top goalscorer award for the 2XI and we look forward to seeing lots more goals from her next season!
DLHC 2XI Top Goalscorer Katie McKee
Amy Long was ever-present in the 1XI defence this season, despite playing the second half of the season with a broken bone in her foot, and her sterling contribution to the team was recognised when she bagged both Captain’s Player of the Year and Coach’s Player of the Year; richly deserved, well done, Amy!
DLHC 1XI Coach’s and Captain’s Player of the Year, Amy Long
Coach Brian McKee recognised the contribution made by Vicky O’Neill by choosing her as his 2XI Player of the Year: Vicky not only playing week in, week out for the Seconds but also appearing for the 1XI on numerous occasions too.
DLHC 2XI Coach’s Player of the Year, Vicky O’Neill
Kerrie T then paid tribute to her newbies in the 2XI by awarding not one, but four Captain’s Player awards to Molly and Katie McKee, Erin Hamilton and Mia Park – all of whom have played an invaluable part in the season for the Seconds, and indeed stepping up to the 1XI when called upon. What an asset all four have been since they joined!
DLHC 2XI’s Captain’s Players of the Year Katie and Erin (Mia and Molly missing from pic)
The players from each team also cast their votes for their own players of the season and it was Helen Hooks who was the overwhelming favourite for the 1XI while incoming 2XI captain Natalie Jamieson was voted in by her peers on the 2XI – well done to both of them!
DLHC 2XI’s Players’ Player of the Year, Natalie Jamieson
The final award of the evening was presented to Dee stalwart Lisa Higgins in recognition of her 25+ years unbroken service to the club; Lisa has in fact amassed a mammoth 28 year playing career with no signs of slowing down – a remarkable record that was marked by a photo album of the many trips, matches and social occasions that Lisa has been a part of in her time at the club (so far!)
DLHC Recognition Award winner, Lisa Higgins
With the awards distributed all that was left to do was for Kerry and Kerrie to hand over the Captains shields to incoming leaders Helen and Natalie with the gratitude and best wishes from the rest of the club rounding off their season at the helm. Thanks a million, girls!
